Endemic to a six mile radius in the southwestern part of the park, Cryptantha crassipes is an extremely rare flower that grows in what some people describe as "moonscape" conditions.

I dunno, after thinking about it I chose this one over "terlinguacreekite," an actual recognized mineral species from the mercury mines near Terlingua. (Although I am somewhat of a terlinguacreekite myself... ;-)

I remember reading somewhere that the mines in Terlingua all yielded, in addition to the regular cinnabar, some very rare mercury compounds that are found nowhere else other than in Terlingua.  Seems fitting, given the unusual geology of that entire area...

When I was studying geology (sometime in the paleolithic era I think) there were four described minerals unique to the Terlingua mercury deposits (mostly in caverns.)  There now are many more (including some documented as recently as 2004.)

I am aware of terlinguaite, terlinguacreekite, montroydite, comancheite, mosesite, eglestonite, pinchite, gianellaite.  Are there others?

As far as I am concerned, the noble burro, king of the desert survivors world wide, should be the highest ranking.

Looks like we have a few more members who've broken the 200 post barrier and are now eligible to pick their permanent avatar animal/vegetable/mineral name.  Just remember to ask DavidL (aka Casa Grande) to make the change, as he's the only one who can do it.

A few more folks have cracked 200 lately.
Remember the defaults are:
1 post = Kangaroo Rat
5 posts = Jack Rabbit
10 posts = Roadrunner
20 posts = Diamondback
50 posts = Black Bear
100 posts = Mountain Lion

I'm afraid that by the time I reach 200, I will have to chose my permanent avatar name from among the various fungi that inhabit the park. :(

I was thinking of prospective names as a NICE reference to a Big Bend related creature...

Okie, with all your climbing experience, I'd think it would be a natural for you as a Bighorn Sheep or a Mountain Goat.  An Aoudad is an exotic, just not well thought of in the BB area.
