Luna's Jacal is on Maverick Road. The road is generally open to all vehicles, although high clearance always work better. Some parts are a bit of a washboard...but is a great drive. Thanks. One of the reasons I am interested is that I am taking pictures for a furniture company that distributes southwest style furniture. They have purchased some of my work and asked me for "cemeteries and adobe ruins".... I smiled to myself and told them, "I'll be back in April!" There's sites listed there I've never heard of before, but there are sites shown on other maps that aren't on that list. That's one of the things I like about Big Bend, noone really knows what exactly is out there.

That is a great list of gravesites. I have seen some of them, but had no idea about some of the others. Some were in areas where I have already been, but have not noticed them.

 Someone mentioned Black Gap Road. I drove it Feb 2005, but did it south to north. I had some trouble pretty quick after I left Mariscal Mine and went through a short narrow canyon. The drop was sharper than I liked and bottomed out, not bad, though. I thought the worst was over. The picture shown was the worst part for me. The 4WD helped bacause I know that several times not all of my wheels were on the ground. The car I was in (GMC Envoy XUV) is 4WD, but has too long of a wheel base and not really enough clearance for that road. I won't do it again in that car. I thought it would be a great drive, but I don't remember much because I was concentrating so hard on the rocks. I gave myself plent of time and did not hurry at all. I don't think I could make it going north to south. |

black gap is no big deal EXCEPT for a couple of key places, which have actually been improved over the last year or so. The bad places are just next to GS1; down the switchback; and then over at "pinch canyon" as i like to call it. After that, it's nothing at all.

Back in the 90's my brother and I rented a brand new Jeep Cherokee in Dallas and drove to Big Bend NP. Near Mariscal Mine we destroyed a rear tire...torn to shreds. No big deal right? Pulled the cover off of the spare tire and it was a donut!! Miles from paved road and driving on a donut tire. We came out real slow. Could not believe they put a donut spare on a SUV. Found a guy in Terlingua with a used tire and paid him $40 for it. Learned the value of having a good spare tire or even two when doing the back country. Once saw a guy come out of the River Road East on two front flat tires....he was riding on the rims. His girl friend was sick to her stomach from the rough ride out and somewhat upset with him :D

I've visited several of the gravesites and cemeteries within the park. Some are easier to find than others. La Coyote in particular is an easily found and inspiring cemetery near Santa Elena Canyon ( Photo). It's actually visible from the road to the canyon. The cemetery near Glenn Springs is also easy to locate ( Photo). The graves of Mrs. Hannold and Sr. De Leon are right alongside roads, though the latter is on the Old Ore Road not too far from Ernst Tinaja. I've also visited and photographed the cemeteries at San Vicente and Johnson Ranch. |

Wondering if you know anything about this site. It's shown on Trails Illustrated map near Terlingua Creek a couple of miles north of Terlingua Abaja. There are also the remains of an old stone house and at least one vehicle. I've asked several people, including the Park archeologist but have not gotten any info.  |
