Is there ANY empirical evidence these kinds of 'check-off' campaigns actually do anything other than make the signers feel good?

I suspect (but cannot provide any empirical evidence either) that individual efforts at phoning or writing an original letter (not the boilerplate stuff various groups cook up) has far more effectiveness.

I can attest that Presidio is right on the money.  If someone has a petition, whether virtual or physical, don't be afraid to sign it, but DO CALL, WRITE, EMAIL OR OTHERWISE HARASS your elected representatives.

1. Be cordial.
2. Be brief.
3. Be rational.
4. Be consistent.
5. Be generous with your praise and support if you believe they are on the right side of an issue.

Exactly! Any other approach is pretty much dismissed by politicians.

10-4 to that.  Much better in person or in hand writing.  But, this method via. the web gives folks the opportunity to signup and donate $ and get on their mailing list.
