One of the few downsides to living in Central Texas is the lack of a true autumn, where the trees change colors, bright sunny days are cool and breezy, and nights are crisp and clear. One little slice of autumn exists in Lost Maples State Natural Area, though it is a fleeting and fragile fall. I hiked about nine miles there Saturday morning -- two days after a cold front swept through -- and found most of the leaves were on the ground, though a few remained to remind me of what a fall looks like elsewhere.

Patience. It'll be another year before the maples are "blooming" again.

Very nice pictures, there Jeff!
It has been a few years since we visited Lost Maples. Seeing those pictures causes me to want to return.
