I've been tinkering lately with taking photos of the moon.  My best effort so far:

Taken tonight, 12/30/06, 86% of the moon is visible.

Just thought I'd share!

Panasonic DMC-FZ7, had it less than a month.  It's a great camera, has a fantastic lens.  I really wanted a DSLR, but can't afford one.  The Panasonic is an excellent alternative.

Thanks for the comments!

Just the camera.  When the moon is full in a couple days, I'm going to take some more.

1/800th at f 3.3.  odd combo, i'm sure i could stop it down more and increase the exposure time,....but this worked.  i had better luck with the fast shutter speed.

You can over expose the moon to make it look bright -

I managed to snap this one hand-held (also over exposed):

The first one I posted is the best, I'm really proud of it.

Been a while since I shot the poor defenseless moon, but bdann inspired me.  Plus, we've got a beautiful clear night and a full moon.

I used to figure fstops and exposure times; but I've simplified.

1.  Use tripod.
2.  Use remote release or mirror lock-up (if you have optical view finder).
3.  Set exposure mode to center spot.
4.  Set focus mode to auto, single shot, center.
5.  Turn off image stabilizer.
6.  Set white balance to auto.
7.  Set ISO to lowest setting.
8.  Fire when ready.
