Very neat area. Not all that difficult to access via either the River Road or Glenn Springs Road. High clearance would be recommended.
The area was much more interesting in the early 70s, before the NPS started fencing all the shafts and tunnels. Chain link fencing and angle iron barriers everywhere detracts from the view and experience but, of course, it keeps the inept from hurting themselves when walking around the area unsupervised.
All the more remarkable is that the mercury saturated materials from the furnace are still scattered about the area. A most hazardous hazardous waste site. More people are likely to handle contaminated ceramics than would ever have fallen in a hole.
