Bender Friends,
Please try and keep your pictures that you embed into your posts under 600 pixels wide. This keeps the pages looking tidy and keeps those who have lower resolution screens from having to horizontally scroll.
Thanks,

I've been resizing most huge pics on the
http://www.bigbendgallery.com/uploads/
to 800 pixels wide since last spring. I figured most monitors should be able to handle that size.

I started doing that just after we got DSL at home while staying up with my sick daughter one night. I'd resize a dozen pics, get up and convince Jennifer to go back to sleep, resize a dozen pics, etc. until she finally went to sleep for good around 3:00AM. After that, resizing the pics kind of became a habit. :)
You might want to add to the disclaimer a suggestion to use unique filenames to lessen the chance of them being overwritten. Also suggest they use only letters, numbers, underscores, and dashes, etc. Of course, if people aren't paying attention to the "Please don't put spaces in your image name" caveat, they'll probably ignore any other suggestions, too.

I would like reiterate this point. Please keep the images in your posts to under 600 pixels wide! Also keep your avatars to under 80pxls wide!
Images higher than this value will cause the board to skew sideways and this is very displeasing to look at for some with smaller resolutions not to mention it messes with the asthetics of the board!
thanks for your continued cooperation, and thanks for being here.....

OK...I have been one of those guilty of not resizing pictures up until now.
I just did a sample using Image Resizer, but I have a question...what quality percentage should we select here? Is 100% too much?
Thanks-
Vince

the quality will compress the pic. depending on what percentage you use will depend on the compression. Obviously, the more compression, the less quality the image. If you do 100%, you are risking the file size being too big, in kB that is. So around 50 to 80% will do, most likely.

Try it at 100% first, then if the filesize is too big, use a lower quality setting. And of course,
always
save a copy of your original before overwriting it.

Question about searching pictures
«
Reply #9 on:

I have seen several instances where it appears that the original pictures posted have been "stepped on" or over written by someone else's postings. The original picture names are usually simple (9.jpg comes to mind, I think it was bigbendhiker's pic) so I tried to use the search feature to find another posting with the same picture name. I had no luck. Is there a special way to search for picture names that we can use to make sure the name is not already in use before we post? I sure would hate to step on someone's great picture with one of my fuzzy ones.
A screen shot of how to fill out the search page would be great, assuming
that the search is possible. :?:
Thanks! :!:

The search feature for the board is not always reliable. I'll let you and everyone else in on a little secret. You can view the entire contents of the picture server here:
http://www.bigbendgallery.com/uploads/files/
If you really want to make sure your pics don't get overwritten (or that you don't overwrite someone else's), I highly recommend setting up a photo storage account somewhere. I use
photobucket.com
as well as
flickr.com
. Both are free (unless you upgrade) and they are but two of many free options out there. Just be sure that the service you select allows "hot-linking" to images.

best way around this issue is to be sure you use a very unique name when uploading a pic....like use your first 4 letters of your middle name or something in front of the pic name. This should insure you'll have a unique enough name to stay on forever. (or until I run out of money)

I have added a gallery viewer at the link Richard posted above:
http://www.bigbendgallery.com/uploads/files
This will allow you to see all of the pics people have uploaded to the gallery.
