I've seen, firsthand, what feral pigs can do to an area. The pigs were doing a lot of damage in Central Florida in January of 2005. I watched a group of ~ a dozen feral pigs root up a soft soil area and make a real mess of it.  These pigs were very active just east of Sarasota and Venice.  But, again, these areas are comprised mostly of soft soil types. I don't think a pig would be as happy in the Chihuahuan Desert.
