Randell...you got my adrenaline rush going again.....If all fails, plan wise, take some sandwiches and warm them up in your arm pits, believe me. When nothing goes well for you, them sandwiches are  life savers. Preferably devils ham.

Looking forward to those howling winds pictures and trip reports. DONīT ASK ME , how to wam up the coffee or a Cup of noodles :!: ...

Homero, considering it's Randall to whom you are making recommendations, you might also want to recommend putting the sandwiches in baggies prior to placement in the armpits, or perhaps not!!!

Al

P.S.  Be sure and put a liter of water in your sleeping bag at night so you'll have water to wash them sandwiches down!

Not only will the details of your night in the howling wind be fun to read, I also can't wait for the part where the trail temporarily crosses the north face of the peak. You know, the part where there's a little defile that quickly turns into a steep drop and usually this time of year the trail is a sheet of ice. At least THAT part is sheltered from the wind, sort of.

Ice, that's why I have these:

I've stayed at GUMO twice before and it has been freezing cold both times.  Haven't stayed at the campsite on the peak yet...until now.

Looks like you are going to freeze to death Randell.  You should probably subtract 10-15 degree's from the forecast at Salt Flat to make up for being at higher elevation.  Add in some wind chill from 20-30 mph winds and it's damn cold.  Might want to change your trip plan to something like:

"Try to heat Mtn House food but stove won't stay lit, eat semi-frozen Spam directly out of the can with numb fingers and try not to puke it back up again.  Lose tent and rainfly in high winds when they are "set down" unsecured on the ground by helpful but stupid hiking companion and the tent blowed off toward Pine Springs somewhere.   Spend night shivering in makeshift stone hole/grave trying to last until first light.  Contemplating homicide but decide I might need to eat one of my plump hiking companions later in the trip."

Sounds great Randell!

Hehe.  Theoretically, our stove won't be affected by wind or cold.  It's a flameless oven by Mountain House.

I think we are on to something!

Randall, I hope the clouds give you a break.

Some day perhaps I, too, will be honored to learn the finer touches of armpit sandwiches. I'm especially interested in variations in the use of Wax Paper Origami on a sardine armpit sandwich although a smoked meat would probably be a more consistently quality sandwich.

Perhaps then we should comment on Randall's agenda.

What I would do is get there.  If driving from El Paso, one can see if a cloud is hanging over the mountain as you turn to climb into the park.  If that's the case, chances are reduced to have the VIEW after climbing up there.  WHAT'S WRONG WITH SEEING CARSLBAD CAVERNS and McKittrick Canyon that day.  Hike to the back of McKittrick and try hiking up the trail at the butt end up into the bowl*.  It is one steep SOB.

Assess the situation.

The bad news is you end up sleeping in the campground at Pine Springs.  The good news is you are not suffering for no good reason and get to see a lot more.

Next day:  Do the day hike to the highest point in Texas.

Just a thought.

Al

* OK OK, it may not be the bowl, but you know what I mean.  It's up in the pines.

I recommend carrying a couple of neutral density filters. They don't weigh much, and they really bring out the details of clouds on a bright day. For not-so-bright days, I recommend Photoshop, but you don't need to take that with you ....

How about just climbing to the top and camping out up there until the clouds clear - might be a couple of days, but you can always take Homero along to "warm up" your sandwiches.  Just hunker down.   8)
