Upcoming reservation system changes
In January 2007 the National Park Service will be implimenting a service-wide improvement to the reservation system. From January 24 through February 6 visitors will be unable to make reservations.

Due to the upcoming blackout period, it is strongly suggested that all Spring Break reservations be made before January 24th.

So, if I want to backpack around the South Rim during this time will I need a reservation?  Or is all of that considered backcountry camping, for which I get a permit in person anyway?

You will have to get a permit in person for your South Rim site and no more than 24hrs in advance.

and if you're going to be there on spring break....you'll want to be in line for your permit as soon as the office opens.

And that would be the office at Panther Junction, correct?  Back in 1994 we signed up for Chisos sites at the Basin ranger station.

I know during the busy times they always have the "backcountry office" open down at PJ.  When it's really busy, you have to go there for a permit.  Other times it seems you can get one in the Basin, they just call down to PJ and verify the site is open.

Well, I won't be there at busy times at all.  I go backpacking to get away.   Im going the first week of February.  That's why I was concerned that I might need a reservation.

Thanks again guys.  Very helpful
