Up to eight inches could fall in the Chisos Mountains

ALPINE – The National Weather Service, Midland/Odessa office, issued a Winter Storm Watch from late tonight through Wednesday morning for the entire tri-county area. There could be as much as four to eight inches of snow accumulations including along the Rio Grande, according to their weather alert.

The winter storm warning covers the Davis/Apache Mountains area, Pecos, Marfa Plateau, the Big Bend area and Terrell County. Cities in the path of the storm are Alpine, Fort Stockton, Marfa, Big Bend National Park, Marathon, Sanderson and areas to the east of the City of Presidio.

While today is Martin Luther King Day and a holiday for many government offices, school districts are in session but they will be watching the weather as it develops the next 24 hours, according to Mike Davis, AISD superintendent.

Currently at 7:30 a.m. with a temperature of 28 degrees and a wind chill factor of 19, there is some rain/freezing mix falling in Alpine. Lisa Outlaw, who lives in North Double-Diamond south of Alpine, called BHOT and said that everything is covered with ice. “It’s like a winter wonderland,” she said. Also, there have been numerous car accidents reported in the area because of road conditions.

Laura Mueller, Midland/Odessa office meteorologist, told Border Hotline that, “Alpine’s temperature should rise to 40 degrees around lunch time, tonight it will get around 20 degrees,” she said.

“After midnight to lunch time tomorrow there will be snow falling with cold temperatures for the remainder of the week,” Mueller said. “Also, the models show that there is another storm on the horizon next week.”

According to the forecast, today the storm will move east toward West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico. It appears that wintry precipitation will start late tonight over the Davis’ Mountains south across the Big Bend and east across the lower Trans-Pecos.

A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is expected late tonight. By Tuesday morning the cold air will have deepened enough so that all precipitation will fall as snow.

Total snow accumulations over four inches are possible generally east of a Presidio to Marfa line and south of Marfa to Sheffield. Amounts over six inches will be possible over the Glass and Santiago Mountains, while amounts over eight inches are possible over the Chisos Mountains in the Big Bend National Park.

Snow is forecast to end from west to east Wednesday morning as the upper level storm system moves east and away from the area.

I was trying to scan thru some pre trip reports to find out... I imagine anybody who wants to see this snow needs to get up the road to the basin pretty soon before the road closes.

NOTE:  When I access the webcam I can a "Warning Will Robinson" message that the "authentication" warning that the certificate is invalid and do you want to proceed.  The message is via. one of the multitude of virus/spam/adaware programs running on my PC.  I just continue on...

I believe Sir. Randell has/had an application that automagically acquired images from the webcams every xyz minutes.

Yes I do.  It captures every webcam image from the Basin, PJ, Gumo, and McDonald.  Of course, I have to turn it on.  I have lately only been monitoring the Basin and GUMO.  I just turned on McDonald's and PJ so we don't miss anything.  

I'll post if anything cool gets captured.

Wow.  I sure hope someone is able to post some more snow photos.  I don't think I could brave that weather, but I sure do enjoy seeing other people's photos!
