I'm in the process of putting together a rather loose itinerary for the first 2 weeks of April (my son's high school spring break). I was planning to stay for 3 nights in the basin campground sometime during the stay. When I checked what was available, there was not one night in the reservable sites in that entire time frame. Could that be possible? I know it gets really busy in March, but I thought it quieted down by the first week in April. I spent one night in the basin campground last April and it was about 1/3 full.

I remember a thread (couldn't find it) mentioning a fair amount of reserved sites were not actually used and it appeared that there wasn't a system in place to release those sites when the people didn't show up. Does anyone know if that's still the case?

It seemed much easier when it was all on a first come first serve basis.

I'll post the itinerary when it firms up a bit.

Check with Muse or Eric, but spring break is very very busy. Good Luck.

Certain % of the sites are not reservable in the Basin, first come, first serve and take your chances.

There are no available sites in the system for any dates. Looks like they took the system down before the scheduled date. Nothing like a system upgrade that gets started before the posted date. I bet when the system comes up you'll be able to find something, or should I say "if" the system comes up. Nice job Reserve America!

Upcoming reservation system changes
In January 2007 the National Park Service will be implimenting a service-wide improvement to the reservation system. From January 24 through February 6 visitors will be unable to make reservations.

Due to the upcoming blackout period, it is strongly suggested that all Spring Break reservations be made before January 24th.

I knew about the blackout period and was trying to get the reservation before it happened. I was thinking the same thing about them taking it down early.

I'll probably try it after 6 feb or take my chances on the non-reservable sites or just stay somewhere else in the park those 3 nights. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find a spot in the basin campground at that time frame. I've never had any trouble finding a spot in April. Typically, isn't the spring break rush usually over by the end of March?

Yes, Spring Break is over by the end of March. Here's the list of college/university Spring Break dates for 2007.

http://www.tripsmarter.com/panamacity/springbreak/sbcalendar2.htm

April is still one of the top three months in terms of visitation.

Question: why did August in '05 have 45,000 visitors? Refugees from Katrina?

Based on the following email which I just received, as of Feb 07 reserveamerica and, I assume, reserveusa will be replaced with

http://www.recreation.gov/index.jsp

Quote
Customer,

The National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS) is expanding.

The NRRS™ , your one-stop reservation service for the USDA Forest Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation outdoor recreation facilities and activities, is expanding as the National Park Service is integrating additional parks. The addition of these National Parks and their reservable facilities and activities will occur Wednesday, February 7, 2007.

Our current website, www.Reserveusa.com will be replaced with our new site www.Recreation.gov for reservation and recreation information for Federal lands on February 7, 2007.

As part of this change, all customers with current member accounts on ReserveUSA.com will need to create a new member account on www.recreation.gov - this is for protection of your privacy and security. Your new reservations account will only reflect new reservations you make on our website. Active reservations you have made prior to the move, are still on our system, and can be changed only through our reservation call centre. This also includes customers who have made reservations through www.reserveramerica .com. Upon visiting www.Recreation.gov create a new membership, by simply signing up with your information and start your reservation or search for your favorite outdoor recreation facilities and activities.

In addition to providing reservation services for agencies participating in the NRRS, www.Recreation.gov will also become an enhanced recreation portal and provide trip planning information for many other Federal recreation facilities and activities. Key enhancements and benefits include improved reservation availability searches; the addition of shopping cart functionality (multiple reservations with one payment) and improved regional and campground level maps. This change is part of the Recreation-One-Stop initiative. Reservations can be made on the new website beginning at 10:00a.m. EST on February 7. (The current NRRS website, www.ReserveUSA.com will automatically redirect to the new www.Recreation.gov website). In addition, effective February 7, reservations for the new facilities will be available through the NRRS Call Center at  1-877-444-6777 beginning at 10:00 a.m. EST.

You can expect some temporary “growing pains” and scheduled interruptions for reservation services during the transition period for the new facilities joining the NRRS and for some participating agencies. The National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Bureau of Reclamation facilities will experience a “reservation blackout” period beginning Wednesday, January 24 and continuing through Tuesday, February 6, 2007.

Please be advised that if you have an existing reservation for one of the effected facilities you will no longer be able to see it on our websites after Wednesday, January 24. To make changes to an existing reservation please contact the NRRS Call Center at 1-888-448-1474

I was in the Campground during Spring Break time in march and it was busy and cold....some of the people in the camp ground shouldn't even be there...all they do is sit and fart around all day.

They seem to have some new policies regarding reservations as well.  I tried to book for 10 days in December and I had to make a reservation for 7 days under my name and a reservation for the additional 3 days under my little girl's name in order not to have to switch campsites.  Very strange, but we got it to work with the help of calling in to reservations.
