Most of the few vehicles I saw in the Baja back country were 2WD pickups.  The locals didn't seem to need it.  They did have spare tires, shovels, picks, spare boards, etc., to do road repair, rock removal, etc.  I might add that mud wasn't a problem except in February.

Mud is a particular problem on the River Road. It's thick, gooey and lots of it.....without a 4x4 in that situation, you're hopeless.   Of course, mud is a problem when it's wet, which could be anytime of the year.  Should have seen my Jeep on River Road in January!

Yep, definitely the driver. I saw a Lincoln Towncar coming out of Pine Canyon last year. I'm sure it was a smooth ride, but it wasn't exactly high clearance  :D

um, let's not forget the importance of the vehicle.  It's not just one or the other....a good driver and a good high clearance vehicle is the main force here....but the weather changes as much as Micheal Jackson changes his nose.......a lincoln towncar on any of the backroads is not a good idea. (except for maybe Grapevine or the front half of Paint Gap)

Well I inquired further and he thinks his vehicle would be likened to a suburu wagon...low clearance, or car clearance.  So, from what I'm seeing here, that kind of vehicle wouldn't cut it. Great advice from all btw...thank you.
