Not the brightest bulb - from the Border Hotline...

Van Horn man arrested and charged with threatening U.S. postmaster
San Antonio – U. S. Attorney Johnny Sutton announced that federal authorities arrested 65-year-old Robert Norman Carson of Van Horn, Texas this morning (Feb. 27) for threatening to kill a U.S. Postal Service employee.

According to a criminal complaint, Carson entered the U.S. Post Office in Van Horn on Jan. 31 and accused U.S. Postal employees of stealing his mail and or giving it to other people. During a conversation with the Postmaster, Carson told her, “If I figure out which one of you is giving my mail to other people, I am going to bring a gun up here and kill one of you.”

In addition, Carson allegedly reiterated his threat several times during a conversation with a U. S. Postal Inspector on Feb. 8 in the lobby of the U.S. Post Office in Van Horn.
Upon conviction, Carson faces up to three years in federal prison and a maximum $250,000 fine. He remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing on Thursday, March 1, at 1: 30 p.m. before U. S. Magistrate Judge Durwood Edwards in Pecos.

This case was investigated by the U. S. Postal Inspection Service and is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney James J. Miller.

A criminal complaint is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until convicted through due process of law.

This likely will become what is known as a deferred prosecution after the psychiatrists get done. The guy appears delusional. The fact that he made the statement several times to investigators indicates he's a little off center.

The publicity that they jumped on this is worth a lot to deterrence. Of course, overt statements like that cannot be ignored and you cannot ever assume he wouldn't be capable of following through. Thus, the investigation.

We may never hear any more about this. However, unless he has some prior criminal record, this probably will be a probation situation, or a mental health issue.

I feel bad for this guy.  I sent him a letter suggesting that he calm down.  But, I guess the postal worker stole it.  :?
