I'd rather be on the South Rim

The NY Times had an article this weekend detailing a fight between Erie, the male peregrine who (with his mate Dorothy) have bred in a nest on the University of Pittsburgh campus, and a male interloper. The bloody battle lasted 15 minutes and ended with the two males tumbling out of the nest. Dorothy flew out a minute later.

An interesting description of the fight, which was observed live via web cam, and some still photos from the web cam are posted on the Western Pennsylvania Conservency's peregrine recovery program page. These types of fights are apparently common this time of year, but hardly any of them are ever seen by human observers.

If they're gonna make it on the "Smackdown" circuit, "Erie" and "Dorothy" just won't cut it.  I suggest we rename the male "Wings of Death", the female "The Lady Claw";  and the interloper "The Strange Blade".  Wonder what the ring girls would look like?

(it's been a slow day)
