AREA INFORMATION: Big Bend National Park encompasses 801,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert with varied scenery and diversity of plant and animal life. The park community consists of 250 people; including employees of the NPS, Concession, Border Patrol, Postal Service, School, and their families. A state-accredited elementary school (K-8) is located at Panther Junction. The park has a post office, gas stations, camper stores, restaurant, and lodge. Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping, bicycling, and river rafting. An active employee/ community association sponsors social events throughout the year. Elevation at Panther Junction is 3,800 feet. The climate is generally pleasant with hot summers (90-100 degrees F.) and mild winter (30-50 degrees F.). Terlingua (a small town 24 miles away) has a state-accredited high school (no bus service), lodging, restaurants, hardware store, small grocery and gift stores, churches and a bank. Lajitas (47 miles away) has limited shopping, a medical clinic, lodging, restaurant, including supermarkets, hardware stores, a hospital, pharmacies, churches, a movie theater, and a university. Duties
Major Duties:
Incumbent opens, closes, and staffs, the Maverick Entrance Station, Persimmon Gap Entrance Station or the Panther Junction Visitor Center on an “On-Call, “as-needed basis” or assists the permanent VUA at any of the aforementioned stations or Visitor Center as a Fee Collector, especially during the peak busy seasons of Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Year, Spring Break, and Easter. Incumbent serves as the first point of contact for the visiting public. Represents the National Park Service and communicates NPS mission and goals.
Incumbent answers visitor questions about the park and provides information on resources, park facilities and programs, and safety. Incumbent provides resource protection messages to all visitors and distributes maps and other printed information.
Collects appropriate park fees from a variety of user groups following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds. Issues entrance receipts, park passes, and federal recreation passports in accordance with established guidelines. Incumbent prepares financial shift/remittance reports. Handles cash, checks, travelers checks, and credit cards and may occasionally assist in the counting of fee money and remittances.

The Office of Personnel Management's Qualification Standard for the GS-04 grade level are:
One (1) year of general experience which indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR two (2) years of education above high school.
General Experience: Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.
You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.
You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.
You must have a valid driver's license to qualify for this position.
You must wear the NPS uniform.
How You Will Be Evaluated:
You will be evaluated to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications required; and on the extent to which your application shows that you possess the knowledges, skills, and abilities associated with this position as defined below. When describing your knowledges, skills, and abilities, please be sure to give examples and explain how often you used these skills, the complexity of the knowledge you possessed, the level of the people you interacted with, the sensitivity of the issues you handled, etc.
KSA 1: Knowledge of National Park Service mission and goals. Knowledge of park resources, and NPS regulations and policies.
KSA 2: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a high volume of personal contacts in a short time period, often answering the same questions repeatedly.
KSA 3: Experience in the operation of an electronic cash register and the accountable handling of cash, credit cards, checks, and travelers checks.
