the pic in jaime1's post on the 1st page of this thread [I can't figure out how to reproduce that pic here --  :oops: ] looks surreally like certain formations in Estufa Canyon.

And the ones in Estufa Canyon seemed pretty unique, at least to me -- I've covered a reasonable amount of ground in the Bend, though I'm sure these formations can be found all over the SW I guess.

Can any geologists comment on how these formations occur & how rare (or not) they may be?

Sorry Trtlrock, can´t help you with that one. However, the one in Cuesta de Malena , from the picture your posting, is many times much bigger. I hope on this trip i can , FINALLY, get to take a picture up close of the Figure of Christ there. I can not confirm this, but they say is life like size, if so then those granite walls have to be inmense.


  Well my trip has come up today. The day has finally arrived and there is rain..lots of rain. This means that i am not going to have a hard time on the trip with the heat...my main concern, any mechanical incidentes i can make do, i amtravelling with more friends to lend a hand or to help out, if needed.

  When we go out and have rain, it translates in to a good trail, not much dust to pick up...yeah, plenty of mud but better have that than a dry throat. I hope i can take as many pictures as possible and post for your entertainment.

  I am mnot carrying a GPS, still have not decided which on to go for, but there are more friends who will do so, and i can ask them for a copy of the trail ride file, i can post here the same.

 I was a little bit nervous at the time, because we are traveling a far, but not anymore. Right now, i just want to go and start enjoying the trip.

 So enough said, i leave you now and will post the pictures , obn my return.

Well I'm back, folks !!! It was a revealing experience for many reasons, at least to me.

 I had drivetrain problems, little sleep, it was hot, it was cold, it rained, it turned out to be more than expected and most important very rewarding.

 The La Linda area, is a matter to discuss deeply. Many factors are involved to really get to develop the area in to a tourist center. From the Mexican side it is nearly impossible to reach it, unless you have a good vehicle preferably 4x4 and with clearance to go over washout roads,high arroyos and deep pour offs.

    Fred Keller is the permanent resident in the La Linda Bridge ( now abandoned ). He is a snake volunteer for the Blackgap Snake Survey program, drinks beer allday and fishes for catfish. He does not like to go to the BiBe Park...too many rules!!!, he says and very little attention to the visitors. I think he is a little bit exentric IMO, but he seems to be very happy. There are really high hopes in reopening the bridge, but will develop this in my full report, once i gather the videos , google pictures and GPS coordinates as we move forward.

  I am , still, hungover from the lack of sleep and the repair trip to my truck. We arrived here in Piedras Negras at around 4:am today, and i am really dead tired.

 I will post no later than this weekend, I should be able to gather the remaining information  by Friday. It is good to be back again.

   One thing i regret    , is that we could not hook up with the folks at Sabinas 4x4 club, it would have been just awsome to do so, we just never found each other.

Homero, I was beginning to worry.  I look forward to hearing more about your trip and the trials and tribulations of breaking down in the middle of nowhere.  If you don't have many many pictures you will never live it down!

Well, glad you are back safe and sound after an incredible adventure.  So, is Fred Keller stationed on the Mexican or the American side of the river, or does he occupy the center sand bar in no mans land?

It's going to be tough waiting for the weekend, the weekends starts on Thursday in Mexico right?    :D
