There is now a weather station on-line for RGV.

And it's already 103 degrees (in the shade?) - so bring your water cooled sleeping bags if you plan on using the campground down there.  The last time I visited RGV during the 4th of July week sometime, there were exactly two camp spots that I saw occupied.

Speaking of weather, did anyone notice the 55mph wind gust at PJ Sunday evening?

Actually, the wind at PJ can be pretty strong and gusty at any time of the year. Or, anywhere in the park for that matter. If I was in BIBE and wanted to get away from some of the wind, I would camp in the high Chisos. They offer some relief!

and looking to be another scorcher today....85 at 8:50am this morning.

I was down there one 4th of July week, still don't know what I was thinking.  Can't remember if it was '01 or '02, but we were the only ones in the campground until around 4pm when some other people showed up.  We started that day with the Burro Mesa Pour off hike around 9am, not too bad...
Then over to Santa Elena, started ok, but oppressively hot by the time we got done.
Had lunch in front of the Castolon store, and then for some insane reason decided to head to RGV to setup camp.  hot hot hot hot, too hot to sleep, too hot to do anything.

This weather station is temporary, and will eventually move to another location. It is likely to stay on location through the summer (fire season).

So, don't get too attached to it.

I see the temp at RGV right now is 108.  I think it's OK if the station is temporary - I'd rather not know anyway!

When we were there over the 4th in 2000 for our honeymoon there were about 3-4 sites occupied. It was wonderful. We only had a tent top popup old apache and snagged one of the camp host sites. That was one of our favorite trips. Now with the motorhome there is no problem, just get an RV site and crank the AC. Who cares if it's 109 out (we actually run more air for the dogs than outselves, we still haven't run the AC in the house yet this year, it hasn't been over 82 inside yet).

Ahhh....to think what I'm missing right now....

"Is it normal for it to be so hot here?"
"Will it be this hot tomorrow too?"
"How long is it going to stay this hot?"
"Are the other areas of the park this hot?"
"Why aren't there so many visitors here?"
"Oh, this is a winter park?"

"SURE IT IS!!!!You taste like chicken..... 'Gators gotta eat, y'know..." guess that's it for my NPS career dream...

My favorite is the list that's been cruising the 'net since its inception:

The following comments are reportedly actual comments left on Forest Service Registration sheets and comment cards by backpackers completing wilderness camping trips, who went to the mountains and wilderness to hike and camp.

Comments:
•   A small deer came into my camp and stole my bag of pickles.
Is there a way I can get reimbursed?
Please Call.
•   All the mile markers are missing this year.
•   Found a smoldering cigarette left by a horse.
•   Too many bugs and leeches and spiders and spider webs.
Please spray the wilderness to rid the area of these pests.
•   The coyotes made too much noise last night and kept me awake.
Please eradicate these annoying animals.
•   Need more signs to keep the area pristine.
•   Too many rocks in the mountains.

Suggestions:
For Improving Trails
•   Elevators would help on steep uphill sections.
•   Trails need to be wider so people can walk while holding hands.
•   Trails need to be reconstructed. Please avoid building trails that go uphill.
•   Please pave the trails so they can be plowed of snow in the winter.
•   Chair lifts need to be in some places so that we can get to wonderful views without having to hike to them.
•   Reflectors need to be placed on trees every 50 feet so people can hike at night with flashlights.
•   The places where trails do not exist are not well marked.
•   Need more signs to keep the area pristine.
•   Too many rocks in the mountains.
For Improving the Wilderness
•   Instead of a permit system or regulations, the Forest Service needs to reduce worldwide population growth to limit the number of visitors to the wilderness.
•   Need more signs to keep the area pristine.
•   Ban walking sticks in the wilderness. Hikers that use walking sticks are more likely to chase animals.
•   Too many bugs and leeches and spiders and spider webs. Please spray the wilderness to rid the area of these pests.
•   The coyotes made too much noise last night and kept me awake. Please eradicate these annoying animals.
•   A McDonalds would be nice at the trailhead.

My wife and I quote these constantly in our daily lives...Think my favorite is, "The places where trails do not exist are not well marked."...
