What is Your Most Amazing Moment in Big Bend?

David, it's on an old VHS tape somewhere in the house, I don't have the equipment to do a transfer. :(

It wasn't exactly in the park, but in the early 70's my brother and I were climbing on the Rockpile on the Scenic Loop by the McDonald observatory, back before the area was closed to the public. We had gotten way up high on the boulders, when we looked across to another pile of boulders about 20 yards away. A mountian lion was walking across the top of a small ledge where my brother and I had been maybe 15 minutes before. We were too young and stupid to be scared. We kept on climbing and exploring, and later when we told Mom, she just about wet her pants. :shock:

I think if I saw two mountain lions/black bear in a day...or even one for that matter...it would come in a close second.  

It would be the peak of years and years of anticipation for that one moment when I first saw one.  Some day I'll be lucky enough.

Yeah but my kitty's ran away cause that big diesel truck started comin and I was sad :(  because I wanted to pet them and hug them and squeeze them and love them and play with them and I was mad at that bad truck :x

I really wish you do Randell, maybe it'll happen when you and your babie's are a bit older and the whole family can enjoy it! :D

Yeah, when my babies are way older:!:   At this point, there is no way I'd get a photo as I'd be freaking out trying to get my babies on my shoulders and taking defensive positions.

Of course, with some teenagers one might be inclined to give them a push towards the big kitty.   :twisted:

We were staying in the Basin in June 2003.  I remember waking up to the moonlight from a full moon coming through the window of the room (at the lodge) we were staying in.  I thought someone was shining a spotlight in on us.  I had never seen a moon so full and so bright!  It was just absolutely incredible!

Sorry, every visit to the West Texas Trans Pecos Big Bend Region holds something special.  Only thing that really springs to mind was not at BBNP, but at BGWMA when a bear said good bye to us one morning as we were leaving.  Bounded down a hill right in front of the Avalanche and scurried off into the distance.  Got a very poor picture of it - didn't have the camera at the instant ready.

Let me amend the following post, first trip out to BBRSP we didn't have a clue as to where we were going and ended up at Warnock in the middle of the night so we could check in the first morning.  (We didn't know that we needed to be up at For Leaton) and spent the night in the parking lot at Warnock in a Suburban crowded with people and gear.  Woke up sometime during the night and saw the Hale Bopp comet blazing it's way through the intrinsically dark sky.  Hale Bopp was so cool as you could see the tail and everything else about it with the naked eye.  Tried to get a buddy of mine that was with us, whose wife was expecting their first, to name the bambino after the comet, but they come up with something else.   :D

Most amazing moment for me was probably entering the park for the first time.  We entered from study butte, cruising toward panther junction and i had to just stop the car and get out and just stand there for a minute.

Nice board you all have here...  I consider myself an avid "Bender" but I have learned lots reading this board...

It is hard to pick out my best Big Bend experience but a couple do stand out...   These are more of adventures...

About 15 years ago while in college I was in the park with a few of my buddies off River Road near the San Vicente crossing when we managed to get the  truck stuck in deep mud near the river...  So it is summertime hot and we are covered in mud from trying to push the truck out and we are just sitting there drinking beer trying to figure how we're going to get out of our little situation when an hombre from across the river shows up on horseback...  He surveys our predicament and after talking with him shortly he returns with a few of his amigos, also on horseback and manage to pull the truck out of the mud...  We were so thankful that we shared the rest of our Pabst and Lone Star with them...

Another trip also back in my college days in the summer I was on an overnight backcountry trip out near Mule Ears when the sky suddenly grew dark and it began to rain and then hail golf balls...  We were in a very unprotected area and had nothing other than our packs...  So there we are huddled under our packs trying to avoid the painful impacts of the large hail stones...  Then suddenly it was over as quickly as it started...  The entire ordeal lasted maybe 10 minutes but I'll never forget it...
