Others say it's the fire ants that have reduced their range.  Here's a quote from Texas Parks and Wildlife horned toad web page.

"Once common throughout most of the state, the horny toad (or Texas Horned Lizard) has disappeared from many parts of its former range over the past 30 years. Its disappearance has been blamed on many factors, including collection for the pet trade, spread of the red imported fire ant, changes in land use, and environmental contaminants. For the most part, however, the decline of the Texas Horned Lizard has remained a mystery with little understanding of the management actions that could be taken to restore it."

I've learned only to use AMDRO because it is specific to fire ants.  I used a product a year or two ago that caused a bunch of earthworms to commit suicide in the pool!  It was horrible.  I like to maintain a healthy ecosystem around my place and avoid pesticides unless absolutely necessary.

Fireants have no redeeming features.  They were even migrating along the Columbia River in Oregon and Washington to the dismay of the folks up there. When I told the locals what those ants were they did not believe at first. After some research and experience they began to understand the "value" of fireants.

I haven't seen a horny toad in Okla since I was a kid, either.  I don't think fire ants have made it this far north, so unsure what is causing their demise here.
