The rangers/volunteers at the visitor's center will usually give you directions to Cattail Falls if you ask nicely. They prefer not to advertise it as it's a sensitive environment which could easily be destroyed by misuse. If you do visit, don't be tempted to swim in the pool or stream, as this is a prime watering spot for all the critters. Not to mention that there have been reports of leeches there.

just got here:
"It is a barren wasteland riddled with fire, ash, and dust, the very air you breathe is a poisonous fume." but in a good way.
truth is that the big bend is wild in the way that much of texas once was. most all of the "wild " in texas and the american west has been shopping-malled or oil derricked; but, the big bend is wild- always has been, always will.

I liked the wide open spaces and lots of different trails, when I went in Sept it was'nt crowded during the day and when you did stop to take a long look and others were around I heard alot of European accents......and a few Hank Hill accents
Magic place, everyone should drive through at least once.(doing the speed limit

Wow that's a hard question, this could take awhile :
Devil's Den, Dog Canyon, wildflower's in peak season, # of species of birds, the cool of the shade of the cottonwoods on a hot desert day, the black tail hawks @ Rio Grande Village, Boquillas Canyon, Castolon, Santa Elena Canyon, backcountry campsites, the sunset on the Sierra Del Carmen & the Deadhorse Mtns. to name a few.

Here is my answer to "What's The Big Deal?"
I put a "video" on my website. This website is currently under construction for a business that I am starting up. I am getting ready to re-do the whole thing and concentrate on Western and Southwestern stuff. There are some pictures from Big Bend in there. Anyway, go to:
www.marie-enmon.com
... and click on the "The Big Bend" button in the bottom left of the opening screen. This took 4 minutes to load  and the "video" is 5 minutes long. The transitions are rough and the picture quality is spotty, but this is the only way I know how to share this.
Hey Curt, now that your website is no longer active, do you have this video available anywhere else?

Old thread just read...and sure would have liked to see that video!!
What I love about Big Bend is the "aloneness" I feel out there. the good kind of aloneness that makes you want to just sit and stare at the beauty of it all whether you are in the badlands area or high in the Chisos, down in a desert wash or looking out of "The Window". You don't just stumble across Big Bend: you have to be meaning to go there. But part of its allure for me is to just sit/stand/lay there and look at it trying to see it as if mine were the first eyes to have ever looked out over it.
I believe God created this place for those who truelly want to experience His glory. Every sunset I have witnessed out there (which has not been near enough, mind you) I feel was created just for me.
