...shown on page 4 of the Dec TPW Magazine?

The caption says it's in GUMO and from the pic, it must be up in the high country somewhere. The tent pad looks like it's right on the edge of a drop off...gotta be careful when leaving the tent at night to "commune with nature" ! I've camped at the site up by Guadalupe Peak (years ago!) but that site was a ways back from the edge of anything as I recall. Just curious where this pictured site is.

BTW, wasn't it somewhere here on BBC that I signed up for a free trial subscription on TPW Mag? Anyone remember how many issues we get?
  Thanks!

Not looking at the picture and just guessing from experience, it's probably the Pine Top campsite which is the first campsite when you climb up into the Bowl from Pine Springs.

Could be Al. I don't think I've ever been up in that part.

I did some searching on line to see if I could find anything about the photog (C.L. Edmiston III) but came up dry. I was hoping to find the image so I could refer others to it.

I'll keep poking around.

Bill, I went to the TPW Mag website and it only goes through November.  I'd love to see it.

Pine Top is the most likely, though near Bush Mountain is what I think are the most impressive views, the drop is not right by the site.  The high Guadalupes are amazing beyond description, but the total lack of water combined with the big elevation gains to get there makes them tougher than the high Chisos.

What GUMO lacks is the sheer size and diversity of BIBE. When combined with Lincoln NF and CACA... I mean Carlsbad Caverns..  eusa_naughty the area is similarly amazing

Scan and post the pic and I'll tell you whether it's Pine Top; I just got back from there 3 weeks ago.

Hmmm...my scanner only handles up to 4 X 6.

I could take a pic of the page but I worry about posting a copyrighted image. Is that okay to do if I credit where the image is from? I'd hate to have the TPWD on my case.

I'll risk it.  Here's a low-res scan of the pic from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine (copyrights, etc):

Freebie.  Maybe it came with that Texas Parks travel package or something.  I was surprised to find it in my mailbox.

Looks like Pine Top to me.

What's up with Gilligan's tent sitting on top of that large tarp.  I hope it doesn't rain...soggy bottom.  Is it even staked in the ground?

Sounds like you have the inside scoop.  A wonderful campsite to sit and smell the pines while looking down on the desert as far as the eye can see.  Looks like he had great weather.
