In case my knees give out or I just get tired of hiking at the Park, is it worth taking the drive down route 2627? How is the scenery? Is the road paved or dirt? Are there hiking trails there? Can you get to or see the river at the end? My NG Trails Illustrated map says "LaLinda" at the south end of the road. Is that a town? What is at the Stillwell store? Can I get a shower there?

Hello.  Yes, it is worth driving 2627 which is paved black top all the way until you run into the road block at the proverbial end of the road and can step out and look at the majestic Rio Grande.  Be sure and stop at Stillwell's and check out the museum, top off with some gas, and get some groceries there.  Long curvy windy road.  If you have a TPWD Limited Use Permit for each person in the vehicle and there is not a sanctioned hunt going on, it is neat to explore the interior of BGWMA itself.  You can drive all the way down dirt roads to river campsites within the WMA.  But, you need to get your Limited Use permits BEFORE you get there, closest place would probably be Alpine.  Of course, you can get them before you go at any store that sells hunting/fishing licenses for about $12.  I always make sure that I have one when I'm down that way "just in case".
