We're headed to BBNP the day after Christmas. Plans are to leave San Antonio on the 26th at 6am. I've been at different times of the year, but never at Christmas. What are the chances that we'll get to the Basin in time to get a decent site? How crowded does it get there, really, on the 26th?

It's quite possible the Basin campground will be full on the 26th.  The Chisos Basin Campground Reservations is showing only two reservable sites still available for the 26th, and only one of those is open for more than one night.  I'd recommend reserving it while it's open rather than hoping to get one once you get there.
