Roadside Camping Availability After Christmas
«

Hi all,
My wife and I are heading to Big Bend for the first time the day after Christmas. We would like to tent camp right next to our truck (rather than having to hike to set up camp), which I understand falls under the category of backcountry roadside camping. I'm concerned that the park will be full and we won't be able to get a permit for this type of camping.
Does anyone have experience with availability of roadside camping sites/permits during the week after Christmas? I know it's a very popular time. Our alternative is to find a hotel outside the park (the Lodge is already booked that week).
Thanks for any information!

"Camping right next to our truck" could also mean any of the developed campgrounds, of which there are three. Unless you are RVing, you can probably find a spot in those campgrounds, although they tend to be busier that week than most. Some roadside campsites are more popular than others, but if you're flexible, then you will probably be able to find some that week. If all else fails, there is always Stillwell's just north of the park and the state park to the west.

Thanks for the info, Jeff! Sounds like we should be able to find some place to camp, at worst a little outside the park. Camping it is.

Other than the backpacking sites up in the Chisos Mtns, all the backcountry sites I've seen were where you pitch your tent right next to the truck. They'll tell you all about them when you check in at Panther Junction. If nothings available, move down the road to Big Bend Ranch State Park.

You should have no problem finding a back country roadside campsite. Many times discussed on favorite sites on this forum. Search this site and you will get many opinions to the best places. If you have a high clearance vehicle, you will have many options. Regardless, many fine sites are reachable by passenger car. enjoy enjoy.
