Thanks for sharing your report. Mule Ears and Smoky Creek area is one of my favorite parts of the park. I wish it was still January. Oh well, next year.

Sounded like a great quick trip.  Mule Ears (obviously  icon_wink is one of my favorite places) is a great place to use as a base camp.  While I have criss-crossed the Smoky Creek flood plain several different ways and directions I have never been farther south than the southern end of the Mule Ears peaks.  I now will have to go on south and find that spring where the braided drainages all come back together.  Makes sense there would be a spring there.

For future reference, you can easily hike cross county to Smokey Spring. The worse part is cutting across the braided washes of the creek once you split off of the trail. After that, the vegetation isn't quite as dense. Head toward the left of the "sphinx" looking rock and keep bearing left.

Robert is dead on, if you stay more north and to the left of the "sphinx" rock you quickly get across the lechiquilla choked flats above the washes and hit a more bad land type area with much less vegetation then it is an easy stroll up to Smoky spring.

David, I love your picture btw! Where have I been? Picture that little guy of your at 16 and playing organ in a rock band. I have pictures of him when he was in a backpack and I was hauling him out to the Chimnies at about the age. With one in college, with lots of college trips to investigate and me hauling my other son to gigs. I'm up to my ears in rock and roll.

My buddy that hiked to the Springs with me, lived in Alpine for years, now in oregon, he mentioned several times how much he misses this area. It's very special. I'm gonna do my best to get back at least once a year. Next year, we're gonna try to figure out a way to explore the fresno creek, Elephant Tusk area. Oh, great report on your trip on the Dodson. Sounds like an adventure!
I wanna see that country around Fresno. I think our plan will be to hike in from Blue Creek, and set up a base around Fresno, doing hikes south from there.

I didn't take a lot of photos and I'm nowhere near the photographer most of you are, but here you go.
