Quick Trip - Near San Antonio

The best hike: head west from the camping area along the Colorado, then head up Spicewood Creek: waterfalls, swimming holes, cliffs and wildlife aplenty. About 2 miles up the creek, turn right, follow a fence line up to the entrance road, cross the road, down the hill and into a meadow along the Colorado. Then right again, back to the camping area. It's about a 5 mile loop.

I have done part of your hike...up Spicewood Creek is great.

I was there in '92 (maybe 93?) when the park first opened and the park was TRULY empty.

I always forget about this park...Gorman Falls is mazing too.

I have camped at the primitive campground at Canyon of the Eagles and paddle up river to the state park checking out the eagles and the waterfalls. The last two years the water has been so low, I haven't been. There is a nice campground with very nice individual showers, but I like the primitive area. The Fri night starwatching is well worth the visit. They have two large telescopes hooked up to computers and put on a good program. The hiking trails are good also.

Devil's River has bathrooms at the office with water. The hike to the river is beautiful especially if Dolan Creek is up-you cross it twice.

Seminole Canyon would also be a great place to hike and explore. Take the hike to the overlook for Panther Cave a famous cave painting site. Nearby is the Pecos River bridge with lots of photo ops there and Judge Roy Bean isn't too far away in Langtry.

Personally, I would go to Seminole Canyon. I've been there with plenty of dark sky and beautiful stars.

SA Bill...you can't go wrong with LM! We've been there many, many times. Hopefully the mountain luarel is blooming! And be sure to listen for the barking frogs at night! They live in the limestone cliffs facing the day use area near the Maple Trail. Sound just like a pack of dogs...
Try for site #16 or 17. These seem to be the darkest sites.

This trip I'll do LM. Later, before it gets too hot, I'll have to try Seminole and Colorado Bend. There are just too many places to check out!
