I have the very basic Garmin eTrex GPS unit. I have had this for 4 or 5 years or so,

I have a bunch of locations I want to enter into the unit for my upcoming trip.

I don't have a data cable and I tried to make one last night with instructions from the web but I failed miserably.

Anyway, if I get the Garmin data cable for this unit, what program could I get to transfer waypoints from my PC to the eTrex unit?

or would I be better off just buying a new GPS unit?????

Garmin Mapsource will do the transfer. So will most of the mapping programs, like NG topo series, Delorme etc. There are lots of other 3rd party options, ..OziExplore, Gartrip.

The Garmin transfer protocol language is open source and many indpendent software writes have develop applications for GPS that easily transfer data.

A newer unit would be better for many reasons:

1. Features
2. Receiver sensitivity
3. Better displays
4. More memory
5. Mapping capability.

It's all about the $$. That is a personal decision

what are your thoughts on the Garmin Rhino 130??

a co worker is willing to sell me his Rhino 130

I would love a 60CSx , but if I can get his GPS for a lot less, that may work out better. As you said its all about the $$

Aside from the obvious difference - the FRS and GMRS and NOAA weather capabilities, I have highlighted some differences in red below, that mean something to me.

The BIGGEST for me would be the lack of SIRF chip in the RHINO. The high sensitivity chip is hands down MUCH better than the Non SIRF units. In cover or tight canyons the SIRF enabled receivers stay on lock with greater accuracy.

If the radio is a key buying factor, the RHINO is nice, I prefer a good GPS.

It's all what you need it for.

I would imaginge the RHINO would be real good on the water. No cover or canyons and a radio, NOAA as well.

I've had a number of gps units over the years, including 2 Rhinos.  The Rhinos have been a disappointment.  Steep learning curve, clunky interface, limited utility, poor sound quality and limited range on the radio.

On the other hand, my 76CSx rocks!  It's waterproof, and so lightweight that it floats, which is good for my kayaking, and has more features and options than any one person could ever use.  The track feature combined with Google Earth lets you do some astonishing things.  See the attachment.

The BIBE Mapsourse software is fun but not of much use.  Insufficiently detailed. I don't think the utility justifies the price.

You did the right thing.

Mapsource should come with the 60CSX.

There was an earlier comment about insufficient detail in Mapsource. I disagree, Mapsource is an interface not a map. The detail is as good as the map you load. The Trips and Waypoints base map the comes with Mapsource and is on the 60CSX is not detailed at all and is of very little use, but there are very detailed maps available if you are willing to fork over your money. (or time to generate your own).

I have a homemade 40 quad topo of the park that I would stack up against any. It is great in Mapsource and uploaded to my 60CSX

I had a little snafu in ordering the GPS unit. I actually Ordered the 60CS eusa_doh and not the 60CSx, I discovered that this morning, when I went to check the order status. I called the place I ordered it from and told them I messed up and ordered the wrong unit. they changed the order for me eusa_dance eusa_dance.

The unit has shipped and I should get it Tuesday eusa_dance eusa_dance

Anyone else had these problems with this unit?  I have a Belkin gps for my truck that stays locked under carports etc....the Belkin seems to suck the signal to it.....the garmin just seems to suck! icon_cry

There's at least two different Legend models out there, and the cheaper one does not have a high-sensitivity antenna. It works very much like my dearly departed Summit -- which means, you better be standing out in the open (Some may recall the Summit became terminally separated from me on the sliding slope of Casa Grande a year and a week ago.). I now have a 60CSx and enjoy it.

Young whippersnappers do not know how good today’s GPS units are.  The days of four channel multiplexed units with SA turned on are long gone.  I can understand frustration with GPS glitches, but trust me things are really great these days and getting better with each new model.
