AM Radio in the Chisos?
«

Yes.....I fully realize that being totally removed from society is one of the principal features of camping in the Chisos, and no, I'm not looking to spend anything more than a few minutes one evening listening to a radio.....
....but my beloved Longhorns are playing a big basketball game Friday evening, and I'd at least like to get a score, if possible.
We'll probably be somewhere on the Southwest Rim that evening. Any chance of picking up any AM stations with a small radio?
If not, I'm faced with having to acquire/borrow an XM set.
Thanks.

All I know is when we were staying at the lodge in the Basin when UT was playing a football game, all we could pick up were stations playing the Texas Tech game. Just as well, as they lost to K State that day. You will probably be able to pick up a few stations, but the odds of them carrying the UT basketball game aren't good.

last week in the basin parknig lot near all the motel rooms I picked up a Dallas Am radio station as well as a San Antonio AM station. Not sure if you will have the same luck up on the south rim or not

Satellite radio is probably your only reliable option. You could get some 'skip' and pickup a distant AM station, but no guarantee.

I thought you were wanting to catch the back-to-back Rush Limbaugh and Al Sharpton shows (followed by an encore where they debate themselves and each other)...2 of the many reasons AM radio is pretty much ruined.

.
i'm not sure if this is a re-post, but
Marfa Public Radio has boosted their
output, and can now be heard throughout
the BIBE area....perhaps excepting deep
canyons or in BGWMA
93.5 KRTS
http://www.marfapublicradio.org/
finally an FM station i can get at my cabin,
and the music is excellent (to me)
the more powerful signal is now
broadcast from a tower at Brown Mtn
near Bloys Camp and Crows Nest
off Hwy 166 on the southern edge
of the Davis Mtns
has anyone gotten a signal in the Basin
or elsewhere in BIBE ?
(and i appreciate silence, too!)
thanks,
mp

Yeah, that Marfa station is a power blaster. The last time we were out that way we found 93.5 on the way back home. Listened to it all the way from Big Bend to Junction, where it finally petered out and we switched to K-FAN.
If you're familiar with Austin radio, this station is a lot like KUT IMO.

You never know what bounce will do. I was leaving the park early one morning a couple of years ago after my two week winter vacation and I picked up 770 KOB from Albuquerque NM just as plain as if I was in Albu. So you never know, but I gave up trying to get radio stations there years ago.Sat radio, but probably not your sports programs that you want to hear.

......I don't want to sound rude here, just informative but is this the type of music folks listen?.
I hate to say it but, I just don't get it

I have heard KRLD 1080 AM from Dallas loud and clear in the park on two occassions, both down near the River Road, both very late at night ~2AM.

I listened to 2 1983 World Series games that were broadcast on KRLD. Seems like I was in Lajitas at the time on bookends of a Santa Elena Canyon float trip.
