BBRSP Map Updated
«
on:
March 31, 2008, 09:32:21 am »
For anybody who might be interested, BBRSP has updated their park map. It now includes many of the inholdings. Roads are now better marked to indicate the type of vehicle required (ie 4x4). The Masada Ridge Wilderness area is better marked and for some reason many of the symbols in the legend have changed to become more confusing.
Check it out.

Thanks for posting this.
I see they have removed a loop I took when there in 2003.
I think it was called Oso loop...it was poorly marked at hardly a road, but still neat.
Too bad it's gone...wonder why?
Also, we camped at a place called Escondido Papalotito off that loop, but I see that is gone too.

Oso Loop is still there - as it's the main gateway into the interior of the park. although, there does not seem to be any campsites on it any longer. See attached PDF.

Yep...the new map has excluded many of the trails listed on the old. Make sure you download the Fall 2007 Solitario, so you will have a map with these excluded trails.

I see.
I wonder why they took out that campsite (Escondido Papalotito)...it was on a rise with a nice panaramic view.

Probably going to be too much traffic going by there into the interior? I see they also took out the OSO Campsite - that was the first place I camped at.

Oso campsite was probably taken out as it is a watering hole/tank for the longhorns. The last time we were there, the cg was so full of cow manure, it was unusable.
Entrance to Oso loop from the east was pretty decent, entrance from the west was pretty rough about 3 years ago, but very doable in a high clearance 4 x 4. Great views from it.
Don't have any info on Escondido Papolito
Fires may or may not be allowed depending on the rainfall. Be sure to check with the rangers.

Research and Understand here
BBRSP is for everyone! It is owned by the State of Texas for the Citizens of Texas and her Guests. I encourage everyone to go and savor the beauties of BBRSP. The more people that visit, the more money that will be available for infrastructure improvements, increased rangers, etc.

BBRSP is not for everybody. Too wild, under-patrolled, and under-protected (they really have domestic animals out there grazing, and they do not pick up the poop). But the freedoms this affords for the little bit of Libertarian that resides in all of us makes it a very nice place to be.
GASP! Imagine that. Sounds like my kind of place.

Nice chunk of real estate, less restrictive, and the super nice folks that work out there welcome you as their guests.
All true. The NPS could learn a thing or two about that.

Interesting...the new map lists a new canyon called Tapado Canyon. I thought Tapado Canyon was another name for Oso Canyon.

I took another look at the updated map and saw something else that had been renamed. Arroyo Segundo is now called Arroyo de los Mexicanos. At this rate the park map is going to look nothing like the topos. All this renaming will be confusing at best and dangerous for some.
