Go for it.  These are GOVERNMENT institutions also.  Go into the court house, try it out, packing your pistol and get through the metal detectors.  Then tell them that their sign is unenforceable - from behind the bars for 20 years.  Maybe if you are lucky the ACLU will come to your rescue.  Go to the County Government hospital or the public school and try it out.  Please do.

Thanks for the photos and comments about CHL in Texas. It highlights the misconceptions and misunderstandings about the CH laws. It is best to understand the law completely. Some of the signs above are insufficient to prohibit entry. Specific areas, such as the courthouse are clearly off limits in the law. One must read the statutes in their entirety.

Private property owners can prohibit at any time, either by posting the correct language or by verbal communication before or after entry. Public buildings are much more limited in their prohibition.

The courthouse is specifically prohibited in the statutes, however the sign posted on the the Nachodoches courthouse references section 30.05 of the Penal code- Criminal Trespass.
is NOT even required by law to prohibit entry in a Govt building where court sessions or Govt meetings are held.

The No Weapons No drugs sign does not prohibit lawful carry by a license holder. These signs are typically seen around schools. If one engages in unlawful carry within 300 ft of a school the penalty for unlawful carry is increased. A lawful permit holder may carry a concealed weapon within the boundary of these signs as long as he/she does not enter the PREMISES (as defined by the law). The parking lot, sidewalks etc are NOT the premises. Only the physical building is considered the premises.

Finally it is the responsibility of the permit holder to KNOW the laws. It is also the responsibity of an individual or entity to understand the lawful process of prohibiting entry to a premises owned by them or under their control.



In addition this is not true

If you are a legally licensed concealed handgun owner, you may not carry a gun - loaded or unloaded, into the grounds of an airport

It is lawful in the airport. The prohibition only applies to the "Secured area" of the airport. This area is clearly defined in the statutes.

k. unlawful use, possession, or storage of firearms or unlawful weapons on university property;

The key word is "unlawful". The University did not write this in a vacuum. It was written by someone who knows the law.

The key word is premises - which is clearly defined in the statutes. This does not prohibit carry in the parking lots, on sidewalks etc.

You have made a series of incorrect and uninformed statements about the CH laws in the State of Texas.
As you can see the laws are indeed already very restictive. Returning our right to carry in the National Park is just one victory for the 2nd ammendment. We have a long way to go yet.

You are more than welcome Badknees.  Pehaps Patterson and the gun lobby needs to pass more legislation - maybe making it a fine to not have proper/legal notifications.  You would think at least the city, county, etc. would get it right.  Funny, the bank and the hospital were probably the only ones that got it right.  I drove by the police station and saw no signs.  Didn't have time to go by the county sheriffs office/jail  I did stop at several banks, and honestly only found one that had a sign up.  Get rid of the gray area.  Have DPS issue/sell signs - could be revenue enhancement for the state - something along the lines of lisc. plate registration, safety inspection sticker, the sticker on the gas pumps that it measures correctly, etc.  Must have a DPS sign permit - a little sticker on the sign.  Make it a fine against sign makers to produce improper signs.   

You obviously are more up on the issue and I and I will defer to you.  However, I asked the legal counsel at the university about weapons and was basically told that the university considers "any property" under the jurisdiction of the university to be guns free.  I would interpret this to imply parking lots, the SFA experimental forest - which is part of the Angelina National Forest.  Where the boundary line starts at airports I will defer to you also.   But, I do recall someone at the DFW airport being absconded with for having a weapon in the baggage area - which is clearly not within the secured area.

I was walking down the street the other day in Htown, and the buses were roaring, the news helicopters churning, police sirens screaming, everybody on cell phones, motorists and pedestians playing chicken, and 4 hobos begging money before I made it 4 blocks!

At that point, a calming memory of my spring trip up Smokey Creek with Little Goodkness blocked out all of the noise and I smiled the rest of the way home.

One mistake and your sign is null and void.  So, many signs forbidding CCL rights are unenforceable and therefore meaningless.

"Presidio You Are Not Welcome Here" will not work.

Parks, guns and the commissioner

I don't understand why Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson thinks he can accuse the Richard King Mellon Foundation of being on a "jihad" for balking when Patterson wanted to sell to private developers 14.5 square miles of land that the foundation had given to Texas for conservation. (See Tuesday news story "Texas land chief accuses land donor of 'jihad.'")

Patterson should be given his walking papers so that he can pursue a career in real estate development, as that appears to be his strong point.

The delusional commissioner refuses to transfer the Christmas Mountains to the National Park Service unless its restrictions on carrying loaded guns in the parks are lifted. (See April 13 news story "U.S. parks at center of gun debate.")

Patterson has ignored the will of the people and the opposition of his own board and says he'll defy the Supreme Court. He apparently thinks he's king or George W. Bush.

I understand that oath as a commitment similar to the oath I took as a Marine officer to "uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic."

I don't regard such affirmations as anachronistic formalities. I feel compelled to uphold these commitments even at the risk of my political future (in the case of my oath as commissioner) or of my life (in the case of my previous career as a Marine).

You'll note that the above recitation does not state that I "will preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States and of this state" only when applicable to the duties of land commissioner.

The Second Amendment says: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Article 1, Section 23 of the Texas Bill of Rights says: "Every citizen shall have the right to keep and bear arms in the defense of himself or the State; but the Legislature shall have power, by law, to regulate the wearing of arms with a view to prevent crime."

Transferring 9,300 acres to a federal agency that clearly ignores these constitutionally enumerated rights would violate my oath. I can only assume that the Star-Telegram believes that elected officials should not be expected to comply with their oaths of office. (See Thursday editorial "Gun fight isn't OK.")

The Star-Telegram may consider my position "untenable" and my zeal for the Bill of Rights "obstinate" and an "obsession," but I couldn't care less. Any government official lacking the same zeal and commitment to the U.S. and Texas constitutions should be impeached.

I guess you can call me an old-fashioned believer in the wisdom of those who penned the Bill of Rights and not much of a believer in the wisdom of editorial boards. In the case of the Star-Telegram, it's not even close.
