I'm sure this is beginning to sound cliche, but bringing a little duct tape along-with makes for a good patch when your water container springs a leak...not perfect, but good.

O.K. . . . I figured out i could carry 14 liters (about 3.7 gal.) pretty comfortably. We climbed a pretty steep hill and hiked for about an hour here in midland. The pack weighed about 55 lbs. without the majority of the food. Does that sound about right for a 3 day trip? I still had a lot of room in my pack. We're leaving next friday (18th) so all this advice we're getting is really helping......... Thanks
I cant find a link to my pack because it's sold only at Academy i believe.. It's a KELTY BIG BEND 5000.. Anyone else have this pack?.. if so let me know what you think of it..

Duct Tape is also a good substitute for moleskin (and much cheaper). I've used it for several backpacking trips before.

Once you get up there and get 22-24 lbs of that water out of your pack.....the world will be right again...sounds good and have a great trip! O.K. . . . Not wear out the soda bottle topic . . . but the reason soda bottles are so tough is they are actually pressure vessels designed to contain the gas in carbonated soda. Regular polyethylene just doesn't cut it . . . cool. what i have right now for water containers is ..... 3,, 2 liter hydration bladders.. 2,, 2 liter soda bottles... 2,, 1.5 liter ozarka water bottles and 1,, 1 liter bottle.. oh .. and a little 20 oz for my electrolyte powders that i am bringing. I still have plenty of room in my pack for food also. So hopefully that's enough. CRAM some more advice in .. we're leaving in 3 days..

Welcome to backpacking, you and your bank account will never be the same. Hiking the Chisos is not exactly like sucking down 2 bottles at a fire and picking up 700 feet of 5 inch, but you will do alright. Hiking three days straight doesn't give your body a chance to recover like going home after a busy shift, but the view will make it worth every pain. One thing you can do while hiking is check your watch and make sure you rest every so often with your pack off. For me that means we walk for 20-25 mins, do a standing rest, then ever hour or so, we take our pack off and rest/eat. I still have problems making myself eat enough while actually hiking but following a schedule seems to keep me going longer overall.
I would also suggest going to REI and renting some hiking poles. My wife and I did not discover how big a difference it made until 2 years into our now 9 year backpacking career. Now we take them on all our day hikes also.
Also, I take bagels and split a 1 pound jar of peanut butter with my old lady. Bagels dont smush much in your pack and peanut butter is good energy food.

of course.... another question.. i check weather.com every day for bbnp. this weekend is supposed to be upper 90's and 100 on sunday.. will the temp be the same in the chisos mountains where we will be.. i heard it was quite a bit cooler. anybody know ?

Checking those 2 weather station links it's pretty amazing when you consider those 2 stations are not very far apart (as the crow flies). Altitude makes all the difference.
