recommendations for RV sites

Good morning.

We will be coming to Big Bend the week of Labor Day and will be pulling a 19' travel trailer.  The original intention was to camp the entire week but now we have this.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a place we can camp with our RV?  I've found a few places outside the park but wanted to see if ya'll could give me your input.

Hi,

if you want hook-ups the only campground in the park with them is at Rio Grande Village.  You can get a 19 ft trailer to the Basin campground but there are no hook-ups there.  There are several places outside the park, but I don't know about them.  Have a wonderful trip!

Stillwell Store  Just outside the park boundary,  beautiful area, you can have a ground fire there (as long as the county is not under a burn ban), full hook-ups, good people, good stories, etc.

Nan at Stillwells makes burritos occasionally.  When she does, stock up after I get mine. My rig is a 22 foot and fits in RGV and Cottonwood just fine.  In the basin you will find out how good you are at backing into tight quarters. Stillwell and the ones in Lajitas terlingua can handle very large rigs.  Four or five of the car camping sites can handle your rig also.

I'd second the recommendation for Stillwell's.  We spent two weeks there and never ran out of great stuff to do.  Nan is wonderful and the Hallie Stillwell museum there is fascinating.  And free!

Personally we like RGV RV for our motorhome. We pretty much HAVE to have the AC for the dogs so power is needed. I prefer to stay in the park anyway, and as we like the backcountry roads RGV is a pretty good location. The parking sites are close, however you do get a pretty good grass area behind your RV. I've seen several EZ ups and chairs parked out there on the grass. The river side is better if you plan to use that, also it is a little better for evening shade if I remember correctly (one side gets sun in the morning, and the other gets it in the evening). The guys running the store have been great, and are good to deal with. The year we made it down there 4 times, one guy was recognizing us.

I stayed with friends at the RGV RV place last October and the river side is the best. The sites are very close-the longer buses have a hard time maneuvering. Before you set up stuff in the grassy area, find out when they are going to flood it to water. We came back one afternoon and the picnic table that had a bunch of our stuff on it was in the middle of a lake. But, the water was cool and refreshing so we didn't mind. The showers and laundry are a nice perk if you are staying there a while.

I have a tiny Scotty camper that I've dragged all over the park and beyond, from Maine to California. I use it as a base camp for hikes, paddling and fishing. In BBNP, I prefer the backcountry road sites like Rice Tank but have been very comfortable at the no generator sites in Rio Grande Village. Prob'ly so. It's smaller than a boat trailer and will go anywhere I can get the truck. Reasonably high clearance too. Adds about 3MPG. They do seem to be becoming more popular lately. http://serroscottycamperenthusiasts.com/   Felina is 40 years old and has had a rebuild. 

I nearly lost it last year when the hitch became detached crossing a deep wash on the way into Rice, hung on a boulder, broke the chain and rolled back 10 feet into the wash. I pretty much rebuilt the road to get her hooked up again. No damage. Good thing no one was following as it took an hour.  Steve

Light weight small trailers are really coming back.  We have a 19 foot Fun Finder X 189FBR.  I can take it anywhere.  Whats nice is it along with tow nvan only take two regular parking spaces so can park at any store.  And being self contained, even have solar can enjoy very remote areas.
