Dedication to be held for the newly expanded and renovated Panther Junction Visitor Center at Big Bend National Park

If you own a State of Texas BIBE Lisc. Plate, then you helped out with this...

Quote
The multi-year project has been possible through a partnership involving Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Natural History Association, and fund-raising efforts of the Friends of Big Bend National Park.

Quote
The Panther Junction Visitor Center was first built in the early 1960s as part of the Mission 66 effort to prepare for the National Park Service’s 50th birthday. Forty years later the facility, which was originally designed for the much lower visitor numbers of the 1960s, was in need of expansion and modernization. The historic character and architectural style for which the original structure was noted has been retained. This renovation occurs as the National Park Service approaches its Centennial birthday.

The Dedication for the new Panther junction Visitor Center was on May 1st.  WOW!  You have to see it to really appreciate how much of an improvement it really is...it is bigger with lots of beautiful displays and even a couple comfy chairs.  I wish I had photos to share with y'all.  I will work on getting some photos if they aren't already posted on the Park website.

Can't wait to get back to BiBe and see the PJ visitor center!  Sounds like a big change from what it was.

I was there in March when they were doing all the renovations. Hope it works out better for them. I think they were a bit crowded before.

Here's what the new section of the PJ visitor's center looks like.  This is just the bookstore part; the old area (back to the left of the photo) now has all new NPS exhibits.

The opening of the new Visitor's Center was a great event.  There were lots of people there, both Park employees and visitors.  Here are a few pictures.

Speeches.

More speeches.

Eric Leonard showing an exhibit.

The children there loved the map.

The new bookstore is MUCH bigger than the old one.

There was a good feeling of celebration and accomplishment as the large crowd poured into the big, bright, clean space.  I'm so glad I was there.

Thanks for posting these pictures...I was wondering if they were going to keep that dimensional table "map".
I love that thing...and whenever I have taken first timers to the park, I've noticed that was the one thing in the center that really caught their attention for a while.

Looking forward to seeing it soon...

Vince

They cleaned the map and it is on a new base which is a little higher than the old one.  There are steps for the kids so they can reach it.  It is still in the center of the visitor's center and was a huge attraction.  I love that map as well and am so glad they kept it.  It is one of the few things that is original to the old VC.

I get the same reaction when I bring new folks to the park too.  Their eyes get big when I show them we are going to walk from here to here through this drainage for example.  Of course the rangers have frowned at me when I get too close to it to point things out.  Glad they saved it!
