Cool!  Can't wait to see more photos.  Last time I was there everything was covered in snow and ice.

Trail? What trail?

how hot was it?

When I arrived on Sunday May 18th, it was 80F.  It was 90-95F each day after that, even up in the mountains.  Temp didn't drop below 65F at Mescalero camp at night.  Extremely dry, too... everything looked like a fire just waiting to happen.

Other than the exposed ridges along the Guad Peak trail, there really wasn't much wind, either.

I definitely didn't need any cool weather gear :)  In fact, the heat really cut short much of my backcountry hiking as I couldn't carry enough water to last more than a day or so at the rate I was consuming it.

Dog Canyon area was beautiful and very quiet... Ranger Carver and his volunteers are a super group of folks.  I wrote the Director of the NPS an e-mail telling her how much I enjoyed my visit to Dog Canyon.

Here's a view from the Tejas trail looking towards Dog Canyon:

I'll post a link to my trip report on googlepages as soon as I finish it.  Gas in Carlsbad was $3.94/gal yesterday when I left.

Is there a way to post pics on this site?  Only way I got them to show up here is if I upload them to a site like photobucket first then link to them in a thread here.  Like this:

You can attach up to four pics per post using the Additional Options after clicking the Preview button.  Since you already have a photobucket account, feel free to use it.  There is also the BigBendGallery upload site, but by using it you run the risk of someone overwriting your files in the future.  Using photobucket lets you retain control.

Photobucket, Webshots, smugmug, Kodak Gallery and many more sites i strongly recommend you do it that way, just post your links to your pictures and they will appear here.

You can link directly from your Google page too, like this:

...just paste the URL to the image into the edit window, highlight it, then click the 'insert image' button and it will add the correct tags.

Great report, sounds like it was plenty hot but it looked really clear, great views.

I remember the first time I went to the Guadalupes it was in 1973 when Nixon had just decided we should all drive 55 mph to save oil.  It took a loooooooooooong time to get there from Houston icon_frown

bdann:  Thanks for that tip about linking directly from googlepages.

muleears: Yep, it made Sammy Hagar a bit of cash singing that song "I can't drive 55".  icon_wink

The best mpg I got on the trip was 40.38mpg.  Strangely enough, that was the tank of gas spent putting around Carlsbad, then driving that winding Hwy 137 all the way to Dog canyon and back, then on to Lubbock, TX.  I would have thought all that mountain climbing and winding roads would have killed my mpg.

My wife calls that 2003 Toyota Matrix the 'uglymobile'...  icon_lol ... but it's paid for and gets close to the mpg a Prius would get on the hwy.

I wonder... does anyone really ride horses or mules on the Guad peak trail?

Seems awfully rough/rocky for any stock.
