This thread is based on reports received from the Terlingua Ranch Yahoo News Group...

I checked the Alpine Avalanche Fort Stockton Pioneer Big Bend Gazette Terrell County News Leader and Marathon News Leader - nothing mentioned.

Quote
A friend of mine called to ask if I was safe because she heard that some guy
around here called law enforcement claiming to have gone on a murderous rampage.
She had some details, but nothing as to name or exact location so far.
Does anyone on the group know anything about this tragedy, such as a
name/location??
The details (wife who works, kids, gun ownership and violent derangement
potential) fit several people I know of, but for obvious reasons I'm hesitant to
start calling around saying, "Hey, are you the one on the murderous rampage? Oh,
sorry, excuse the call, thought it must have been you..." or words to that
effect.
I'm really worried about it, though.

Gunshots north of Study Butte ???

I don't know if this is related, but 118 north from Study Butte is
closed right now (9:55 pm). The EMTs are flagging everyone down and
advising them to go home and stay inside. They advised me that someone
is up there with a gun. When I made a smart aleck comment about there
always being people up there with guns, they replied that this one is
shooting at people. Apparently they are frantically looking for him
along the various side roads off of 118.

OMG!! Thank you so much for posting this info, Mr Eby!!
What is the mile marker or gate number?
Does anyone have the name of a contact person that I can call or email to
volunteer to help hunt the shooter??
TC
Judy

All I know is that it is (or was?) north of Study Butte and they were
looking for the shooter. The EMTs I spoke with were very busy and
highly stressed. I decided not to waste their time seeking details. I
just followed their advice and went home.

I'd assume you could call the sheriffs office to offer assistance. I
started to call and ask for details (I'm not brave or well armed enough
to offer assistance), but decided they probably have their hands full.

I should add that I have no idea if anyone was actually shot, just
that shots had been fired. Hopefully nobody has been or will be
injured. I'm certainly extending my best wishes to all involved for a
quick and bloodless resolution.

Update from Kathleen over on the TexasOutback forum:

I heard that it was an armed assault but by the time Paul and Martin
got there the man had fled.

I am brave enough and well-armed enough, AND p.o.'d enough - something *else*
for people to have to worry about, as if we don't have enough on our plates
already, we have to have an armed assailant creeping around shooting at people!!
- but my ailing mother was able to talk me out of volunteering even if they
could use some help, which I doubt. (Maybe it is also everyone's hopes for a
bloodless resolution keeping me out of it, as I'm PMSing at the moment.)
Probably they'll get the BP helicopters if it looks like the shooter is a threat
to the community at large, i.e., if it wasn't a personal altercation that turned
violent.
My prayers are with the victims - and with the shooter, if he somehow shows up
here!
Please keep us posted, and let us know if you find out names and areas involved.

Any updates?

No, I emailed all of the major news organizations up there, but have not received a reply.

Probably under a press black out.  Probably some made up story by the government of "shots fired" to cover up the real story of aliens landing in Shafter after having seen the Andromeda Strain.    icon_biggrin

This started yesterday afternoon/evening with a 24-year old fellow who had been released from prison about a month ago who had moved down here with his mother and was living in the Jo Mama trailer park near the Ghostown.  He beat up his mother and she called the sheriff.  The sheriff and EMTs went out there and got shot at.  The guy said he wasn't going to be taken alive.  The guy escaped.  Law enforcement searched for him until after dark and called the search off until morning.  This morning they called for the search dogs and the guy was found about 10:30 and arrested.  No one was hurt except for the guy's mama and she's going to be okay.  I got this info from a person that was on the scene.

Strikes me as "curious" that the Alpine Avalanche reply I got indicated that "Border Patrol agents were not involved in any way...".

No one had mentioned Border Patrol agents being involved?

I don't know, that is unusual if they didn't.  Since we're so far from "civilization"  icon_biggrin, usually when something big like this happens law enforcement comes runnin' to help out.

Thanks for the info!!
It's hard fixing lunch while staring out the window draped in bandoliers and lugging rocket launchers! Glad I can take a rest from all that worry!
