Just checked the Daily Report for the first time in a while and see that it was 111° at RGV yesterday! 110° at Castolon! Too hot for me. I stay mostly in the Basin when I go to avoid the worst of the heat and it was 92° there yesterday. Guess I'll be waiting until October or November for my next trip.

Impossible temperatures to enjoy those places.I am aiming to head out to sites where there is plenty of water to mitigate the heat......

In 2006, we were there in July. Got to the low 90's in the basin during the day and 110+ in the desert areas. Hot indeed.

. i just got back from my cabin near Fort Davis, and yes it is HOT out there...even at elev. 5800ft, we had 101F yesterday! we cranked on the evaporative cooler for the first time.... man, those work great !! too hot to hike...bummer i'm glad i didn't bring the motorcycle... we WERE going to ride down to the basin and back......oh nooo no.  mp |

Some of us are here everyday.
Point taken  I was thinking more along the lines of visitors who are not quite as used to those kinds of temps. I hope you all can stay in the shade as much as possible. |

Since the subject is too much heat, when is a "normal" time that the temps allow decent hiking in the lower desert in the fall? I have been to all the weather sites to see averages etc, but real experience counts more in my life. Thank you.

2 years ago it was 116 at RGV when we were there.
2 in our group lost the soles of their hiking boots to the heat when walking to the hot springs...I guess the glue holding them on couldn't take it.
I have a pic of it somewhere.

Well i don't know much about RGV...but around here in Piedras Negras, Eagle Pass and Del Rio....Tinactin,Lamisil,Odor Eaters and God knows how many more anti-Athlete's foot creams, are making an overkill with all the feets swarm in fungy , due to the HOT Weather. You all should consider buying some stock with them.....  , it stinks around here: What the hell is it?  |

Y'all are funny.... it's this HOT every year at this time! RGV has some of the coolest temps in the winter and the hottest in the summer! Castolon is the last place I would be in the summer....no generator's allowed to run the AC. At least at RGV you can hook up and take a shower if you're tent camping.....  It's all about camping in the Chisos during the hot months..... |

May and June are the hottest months in the Big Bend region. Castolon avererages 103.4 degrees (F) in June as a daily peak temperature. The only other area in the US with a summertime average peak temperature which is higher is Palm Springs in July at 108.2 degrees (F).
I think I said all that correctly. Regardless, it's freak'n hot out there right now. That's why I'm heading out to the mountains of CO in a couple of weeks.
