Traveled to Big Bend in February this year. Camped at Terlingua Abaja for two nights. On the first day I hiked Chimneys Trail from west trailhead (Old Maverick road) to the Chimneys, than cross country to Red Ass Spring, than cross county back to the Chimneys trail. Met the Chimneys trail about a mile west of the Chimneys, than went back to the trailhead. On the second day I spent time looking at the ruins (near the camp ground) and than drove over and hiked to Burro Spring. I hiked the loop as described in Parent's book. After that I headed back to San Antonio.

Sounds like great short trip, the pictures are great and a rarity, most folks don't go to that area, or at least from that direction.

I am coming thru there in December so it was nice to see them.  Was there any water at Pena Spring, Red Ass or Burro?

Thanks for posting

I'd rather be on the South Rim

Looks like a great trip. The Chimneys is one of my favorite places in Big Bend. I've always approached from the RMSD, so it was cool seeing the views from Old Maverick.

In February (2008) there was water at all three springs.   I didn't attempt to filter any because I carried enough for my day hike.  Red Ass was the only spring where I could easily have gotten water.  The other two would have been difficult due to the thick brush.  I didn't check the entire spring(s) so there may have been easier access elsewhere.

That's great information and by the way welcome to the board!
