Big Bend Wild Burro Project

BIG BEND RANCH UPDATE

We need volunteers for the October Burro Round-Up. If you would like to be added to the project list please email rachael@donkeyrescue.org .

October 2008
The Texas Burro Rescue will be conducting a burro round up in the Bid Bend Ranch. Volunteers are needed to handle the traps, hike the canyons and help load the burros. No experience necessary, on-site training provided. Must be in good physical condition! There are no emergency services. Please sign up with Rachael Komulainen at rachael@donkeyrescue.org

All volunteers must agree to abide by The Peaceful Valley Code of Conduct and obey the direction of the Peaceful Valley Staff.

Items needed for the round up:
Backpackers with their own equipment.
Travel Trailers
Corral Panels
Horse Trailers
Sun Shades
Water Coolers
Plastic Net Fencing

All media is encouraged to attend the October Round Up. Contact Mark Meyers for more information. mark@texasburros.org

Please remind the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department that the Burro Capture Program will not be completed overnight. The burros have been established in this region for hundreds of years. It will take more than a few weeks to safely and efficiently remove them. Some of the officials have been quoted as saying that we have had zero results. We at TBR hope that they will allow us the time necessary to complete the task of removing the burros. If you would like to send a comment to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department click here

Peaceful Valley Works with Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to stop the killing of wild burros at the
Big Bend Ranch State Park

Project Scope

Peaceful Valley is working with the State of Texas to replace the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s policy of shooting the wild burros of the Big Bend Ranch State Park (BBRSP) with a capture program. This program, with limited assistance from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), will include the safe capture, quarantine, testing, gentling and adoption of the feral burro population. This project will be administered, staffed and financed by Peaceful Valley’s Texas Burro Rescue Division. The exact number of burros within the BBRSP is currently unknown. Early estimates range between 200 and 400. Another unknown factor at this stage of the project is whether or not any burros are traveling over the Rio Grande from Mexico.

We are also working with the US Department of Agriculture and accepting any burros that are captured on federal and private lands around the Big Bend area.
