Hi All:

Another bit of information I received last week during our 3 day trip to Big Bend.

A female black bear has recently given birth to 4 cubs. The earlier link weeks ago which described the killing and feeding on a javelina on the window trail falls right in with this information.

The female black bear and her cubs have taken residence near the sewage ponds below the basin camping area.

We came accross 3 people who had different siteings...
1) one couple thursday was on the window trail and came up on the 4 cubs in a tree with Momma bear nearby.
2) one guy friday afternoon was on a ranger tour and saw one of the cubs swimming in one of the sewage ponds.
3) one guy camping at the lower basin campground had a cub approach his tent saturday morning around 11:30am. We happen to come accross the guy actually reporting the incident to a ranger who had driven down to talk with this camper.

My wife has never had a black bear siteing so she talked me into a window trail hike that saturday morning. As luck would have it, we did not see any of the bears.

May is missing and it's almost June.  The statistical sample and research will be blown if they don't post May 2008...

Someone reported that they (the Park Service) aren't posting the latest wildlife sightings until there is a new web master. Is Eric no longer out there?

That is correct. Eric has moved on to another park in the NPS system. Maybe he'll pop in and let us know how he and his family are doing...

That's too bad, he did a really good job I thought.

Re: the bear w/cubs. There might only be 3 cubs now. I talked with a ranger middle of last week who said the most recent sightings were of only 3 cubs. But then a day or so later I thought I heard someone talking about seeing the mother and 4 cubs walking on the road to the cottages. When I saw them on Saturday I only counted 3, but the 4th could've been off the road and in the brush.

If I recall correctly, it will be September when the new webmaster arrives. :(
