I just read an article about how mexico has made it illegal for Americans to cross over and fill up their gas tanks...I dont really understand that law? In my mind it would be nothing but good for their economy?!?!

From my limited understanding, their gasoline and diesel are partially subsidized by the government, so it's not much help for their economy. I had read that they have stopped allowing you to fill up extras tanks with gas, but will let you fill up tanks that are connected to your vehicle. Americans were heading over with big tanks in the backs of their trucks and essentially exporting it back to the states, often for resale.

MEXICO CITY — A Mexican border city has begun fining U.S. drivers who cross the border to fill extra drums, tanks or barrels with government-subsidized Mexican fuel.

The city of Ciudad Acuna, across the border from Del Rio, Texas, said Friday that it fined four U.S. residents for carrying extra diesel and would impound their cars until they pay. The fines equal 70 percent of the value of the diesel confiscated.

U.S. drivers can fill up their own vehicles, but carrying extra fuel containers back across the border violates customs regulations and possibly safety rules, a report from the city said.

Fuel prices here in Okla are a bit lower as I think we have one of the nation's lowest state fuel tax rates:

 Unleaded    $3.379   
       Mid Grade    $3.479   
       Super    $3.579   
       Diesel    $4.139   

Seeing that Diesel price come down is the most welcome relief I see... even though I don't own a vehicle that uses diesel, it affects everything else we buy.

To make the point clear about Mexican Authorities fining the U.S. Gas consumers, or what i heard was the official answer...go figure,ok?: They are fining the people who are taking back fuels in drums,specifically. Not fixed external tanks, such as the ones carried on the back of pick up trucks.

  Essentially the major hazard has been that  most of the folks, don't know how to handle a drum of fuel in the back of a truck because they have no experience in fuel transportation. They do not tie down the drums properly, they do not have the floor of their vehicles coated to be skid resistant or have a wood surface and all of this causes traffic problems because usually you will see a man or a woman who crosses over here, fill up a drum or gas cans, those will be dancing back and forth on the back of the vehicle and while they are watching the cans moving around , they are not watching the traffic and will ram another  vehicle from behind. And that is a major havoc to be around. Other than that, all is good. If you fill up your gas tanks and you have your spare gas tank well fixed on your vehicle, your good to go and enjoy the good prices of fuel here.

 However, the problem has turned over to the U.S. Customs Agents, whom i heard are not letting cross U.S. vehicles back to the States with external fuel tanks filled. Something about protecting the local fuel dispensers, but this is unofficial, of course.
