Hi Al!
The temptation was too strong so I ordered the quads from USGS. I also picked up the over all BB map from Trails Illustrated. I'm (almost) good to go, map wise.

So, how much do all those maps weigh?    icon_wink

Heh heh!
The Trails Illustrated "plasticy" map is pretty hefty and may not make the final cut. The 2 quads are just regular paper and will definitely go along...after I cut out the uneeded sections to save weight. I'm gonna cut the handle off of my toothbrush too!

BTW Shane, I got to look at the Osprey pack like yours yesterday. It's really nice! I also got a look at the North Face Terra 60 too and it's not bad either. I'll make the pack decision later...unless a great deal comes along.

You will really like that Osprey pack after they custom mold that belt to your waist.  I had zero issues, hot spots, etc. with the pack on the recent "drop everything trip".  All the weight stayed right on my hips where it belonged.

Yeah, I saw the heating chamber for the belt. That alone (the custom molding) might make me spend the extra $ and buy the Osprey. I've seen that pack as low as $189.00, which isn't too bad if it's as comfortable as you say. My plan is to buy the pack late next month (end of the season sales?) so I have a couple of months to get used to it.

Agreed... unfortunately my company network blocks anything from youtube but the evil dictator hasn't figured out about flickr yet  eusa_shifty

Here's a few more... this one was taken at the McKittrick trail junction with Tejas trail:
