I'm right there with ya, I've been in the park two out of the last three July's and the weather was fantastic both times.  It's been killing me this year missing out on it!

...the storm that never hit, July 2007

and the spectacular sunset that followed

cool and wet hike up to the South Rim, July 2006

and a strikingly clear afternoon

some menacing clouds rising over Emory, July 2006

That's it!  pissed

There's too much talk going on and too much daydreaming on my part.  I'm going this month!  Maybe in a week.   eusa_think

Here's the plan...haul ass out there on a Friday...pack it up to the rim early Saturday morning...wake up Sunday and haul it back.

That will cost about $300 round trip on gas alone.    eusa_silenced

This sucks!   icon_cry

Awesome pictures bdann, it looked incredibly clear.  I have never been in the summer and most likely never will get the chance unless I quit this farming career   eusa_think

You gotta get someone to go with you and share in the gas price pain.  I figured a few weeks ago that a trip out there will run me in the neighborhood of $350 just for gas, but divided by 4, it's not so bad.  Even divided by 2 isn't terrible.

Yea, I wish, I don't have any time set aside for a Bender until November.

Lessee, $300 for a round trip of around 1000 miles from Austin and gas averaging around $4 a gallon, that's only a little over 13 miles per gallon. Time to leave the truck at home and take a car that gets decent mileage!

Whoa!  Hey!  No fair using that fancy rocket scientist type stuff.  What is it you guys at NASA call it...ariffmutick?

You have forced me to use my noggin and utilyze my map read'n skills (plotting distance on Mapsource) and my cipher'n skills (think Jethro Bodene).

Here's what I've come up with:

From my house west of Austin it is exactly 475 miles from driveway to Basin parking lot.
My truck gets approx. 18 MPG
THEREFORE, it would cost me $211.11 round trip, assuming $4/gal.

That still sucks...assuming I cipher correctly.

Solution for you..... rent a rice burner at $84.00 (tax and all for 3 days), that should get approx 35mpg
At 950 miles round trip, and 27.14 gallons of gas at $4/gal = $108.57
Total cost of $192 split between you and Ay Chihuahua = $96.00 EACH!!!

Arrgghh... you're killin' me too. Those skies are amazing. I've got the itch BAD. I wanna get out there pronto.

But it's not to be, not now at least. Gotta save what little vacation I have left for the arrival of our next little Bender...  icon_biggrin
