It's been 20 some odd years since I camped on the S Rim. I have no idea for sure what site we stayed in but I'm wondering if SW3 was the site.

Soooo....anyone have a pic or two from the SW3 area they could post for me? Might jar my memory and prepare me mentally for my October stay on the Rim.
  Thanks!

Here's what I was able to find by just searching for SW3 in the trip report and photographs forums:

From campsite SW3:

We arrived at SW3 by 2:00, set camp, relaxed for a couple of hours, and were visited by a group of 3 deer.  One of them approached us fairly closely and allowed me to take several photos.
http://www.bigbendgallery.com/uploads/files/doerszd.jpg
They left shortly before the sunset which we enjoyed from a tremendous vantage point near our tents.

Taken about 3 wks ago from SW3.

We enjoyed the sunset from SW3 and it did not dissapoint.  The sun set over Santa Elena and almost immediately we could feel a cold rush as the wind picked up behind us.

And of course, these:
I observed this sunset from an overlook just west of the SW3 campsite. The photos just don't capture the brillance and illumnation of the land and air. The weather had been rainy and foggy when the sun dipped below the cloud banks and set everything on fire. The air glowed orange and pink. It was like being IN a sunset!

although it is not a direct view, as seen in TJ's award-winning pics, the view of Bluecreek at Sunset is second to none....

though not a sexy picture by any means....since you asked, here is an actual view looking towards the Homer Wilson ranch overlook from SW3.   taken on a 2003 expedition...

Woo Hoo!!
Thanks all!! That's what I needed. More! More!! Homero is right...I need a cherry on top...my own pics from up there. I actually have a print of that first pic from TJ. I was so impressed with it that I bought a copy to hang.

Hey, Homero...my wife just got a job at the university where I work! So she's the professora of la familia! We'll be able to car pool so I can save enough gas $ to drive to BB!!

Oh...I think we must have camped on the NE side since these pics don't look that familiar to me.

Thanks again for the pics! What else does everyone have?

I think Jeff was standing exactly where I was (and at almost exactly the same time of day) when I took this pic in Sept 2000.

Well, y'all beat me to it  icon_lol

The view from my shots above is not exactly from the campsite, but close by. To get to that particular viewpoint, just head west-ish from the campsite while keeping the "rim" to your immediate left. The ground will slope upwards (but not too steep), and it will be mostly clear with occasional small oaks. There are no trails, so you have to wonder through the grass and watch out for cactus and ankle-twisting rocks.

About 200 yards (give or take) from the campsite, you'll hit a thicket of oaks. Just wonder through them for a bit and work your way out to the ledge. When you get close, the vegetation will clear and you'll be standing at an impressive overlook (where my photos were taken). There's plenty of room to set up a tripod, although the ground is very uneven.

That's as far as I went. I don't know if other good viewpoints exist further up and west along the rim from there.

FYI, the view from the campsite is pretty nice too, but the trees are a little too high if you want a nice foreground in your photos. Here's a shot from close to the campsite:

That tree doesn't seem to have changed much in the past 8 years.

Thanks tj!
I plan (hope?) to be at the camp site by early afternoon and thus have plenty of time to scout out good spots for taking pics.

I'll look for that tree!

It's one of my favorite sites in the Chisos. Great sunset views right from the campsite. Very windy, though.

You're right Randell, that's a slow-growin' tree.
