I certainly don't like the idea of the bears in the Chisos becoming a nuisance....and with that thought my mind begins to wonder to our upcoming trip to the Smoky Mountains in AUG. ...1500 bears in the park with many, many, many, many more idjit-numbnuts on the trails...Hmmmm?!.

The beauty of the Smokies is they have put bear cables with pullies at every back country campsite and it has stopped almost all the critter problems including mice, coons, skunks and possums. With all your stuff hanging 10-15 feet in the air they just don't mess with it.  I have been in the Smokies a lot and only ever seen one bear in the back country, around one of the old homesteads near Lake Fontana.

Off topic but the Smokies are the same size as BBNP at 800,000 acres, if you get away from the roads you see less numbnuts.

point is that as noted previously, hopefully the stupidity of some does not result in the harm of the people or animals in the park.

This is what we found when my wife and I spent the night at TM1 June 7th of this year. The bear box also had left over food that we were able to pack out. Some people and there kids.  eusa_shifty

I don't have a picture of it, but when my brother and I were arriving at PI-1 in March, we ran into a Ranger who was cleaning up a firepit that had been left the night before. She explained that this was becoming common, and with the extremely dry conditions during that time, they were really concerned about fires. We helped her pic up and cover up what mess was there before settling in to our camp. She said that they knew who was staying there the night before. I just hope that they were able to fine the idiots that left that mess!!!!  pissed pissed
