The Big Bend: How Big Is It, Really?

well, let's put it into perspective......
Big Bend NP is as big as the city of Houston.
Marfa is further away from the Park as Bryan is from Houston.
When driving from Ft. Stockton into the park, the mileage is about the same is driving from Lufkin to Houston.
Alpine is further from the Panther Junction than Huntsville is from downtown Houston.
Van Horn is as far from the Park as Waco is from Houston.
The Park stretches from Katy to Baytown.
The "Community of the Big Bend" would be like having a "Community of East Texas" stretching from Houston, all the way to Waco, Lufkin, and Orange, TX.
But, don't take my word for it...check out the attached map overlay. The Big Bend Region is very Big.

(*sigh*) Well, then I drive from the Basin to RGV and back every friggin work day. Of course the road here is 8 times as wide and has 10000x more traffic. Just wish the scenery here was more like Big Bend.
I gotta get outta this place!

CG... Very good never thought of it that way.
TJ... That just sucks... I drive 11.6 miles each way and I HATE my commute. My old office was 2.5 miles from home. The best was when I had a project going on accross the street from my old home could be there less then 10 min after I woke up.

42 mile R/T to downtown Houston every day.
You have to approach with the right frame of mind.
My rules are.....(in order of importance)
1. Pee before you depart. (never can tell how long you'll be stuck in traffic)
2. Have coffee with you. (Remember rule #1.)
3. Satellite radio is essential
4. Chill.....road rage will ruin your day

That is very expensive much less adding 4 hours to your work day.
No wonder you love to get away from it all!

I used to commute 75 miles one way to Austin everyday....of course, that was when gas was a mere 1.35! (funny I remember complaining about my $350 per month gas bill)...good thing I don't do that anymore!

Thanks, Casa Grande! The overlay of BIBE onto the Houston area puts it in perspective!

Oh I'll never move. I'm only going to do this for a few more years....that is if I last.

Oh in a few years I'll get to stay at home....4 years and 5 months and counting....
I'm semi-retiring early after I renovate my little farm house and when I can take advantage of my "golden parachute"...

So what you're saying is that if I want to drive from Houston to Galveston I have to drive west to Giddings, make a legal crossing of the Colorado at Bastrop and then take the backroads to Galveston? Or am I just reading this map wrong?
