The RMJGMR Trip

Six of us are heading to Big Bend at 2:30am tomorrow morning. RMJGMR = Randell, Matt, John, Greg, Mitch, Ramsey. The plan is:
Thursday
Drive to Big Bend, arrive around noon
Lunch at lodge
Hike Pine Canyon
Secure basin campsite
Friday
Head off to South Rim, do Emory Peak side-hike
Hopefully camp at NE4
See if
Perseids meteor shower
is active.
Saturday
Hike back to basin.
Go check out the Hot Springs OR go to Terlingua for some drinks and grub
Check up on Santa Elena Canyon
Sunday
Drive home
This is a pretty tame trip compared to
last August
and other
recent
trips
. I haven't stayed at NE4 or hiked Pine Canyon before so that will be new for me, but we are not doing any off-trail odysseys or going to any remote corners of the park.
My buddy Matt has never been to the South Rim and the other four guys have never even been backpacking or to the park at all so that will be the exciting element in the trip. I haven't been on the South Rim for 8 years so it is time to go back and check in on the place. It will really be an easy-going trip, maybe too relaxed for my taste, but I don't want to break the newbies.
There probably won't be any photos everyone hasn't already seen, but I'm sure there will be plenty of stories from the newbies (what, I need more than 2 quarts of water to do the South Rim?). Maybe we will get lucky and see a bear or mountain lion this trip - I'll have several guys to throw in front of me if we meet any aggressive animals.
Tame trip it may be, but I am still oozing with excitement to get back to Big Bend...and I'll be there in less than 24 hours...

Boy if it wasn't August I'd spend the night at Pine Canyon that first night. Wonderful view of the del Carmens and you would have it all to yourselves.

The Basin to NE4 including a side climb up Emory is still a pretty good trek for folks who have never backpacked. The effort required to keep that many moving down the trail might raise the level of difficulty for you a bit. I like the idea of having other humans to throw at the lions
Have fun

Sounds like fun Randell. Eager to hear how much man-blubbering goes on (from the newbies, of course, not you).
Hot Springs in August? No thanks. You boys might as well reserve your table in Terlingua now.

I just floated by the hot springs on Sunday, they are pretty gross. Room for one maybe.

Communicated with Randell this morning. They are well on their way - were over between Ozona and Sonora about 9am CDT. Looking forward to having lunch in the Basin and then heading over to Pine Canyon. Several of the people on the trip had not been to bed for like 30 hours as they had neglected to get ready for the trip until the 12th hour and spent last night packing, etc.

oh well, even a rainy day in which you get soaked at Big Bend isn't that bad...

The Basin is just 1.19 inches of rain behind Austin. No wonder my yard is dead.

Just got back home. I couldn't have picked a better group of guys to go out there. Six rough and tumble comedians make for a great trip. I love Big Bend.

there was horrible, miserable rain
sunrises were non-existent
sunsets and the moon (find the moon) were aweful
and the desert was very brown and dry
but other than that, it was ok
