Big Bend may be the place to be when Gustav comes calling.  The 8AM EDT report shows it moving more west as it nears the Louisiana coastline.  Would not take much of a shift to start impacting those from High Island to the Sabine Pass...

Gas lines six cars plus deep in Deep East Texas.  Filled up this morning and it was only getting worse.

...or maybe they are just gassing up for Labor Day since their tanks will likely be empty by the time the storm gets here next week.

Quote
At 200 PM EDT...1800z...the center of Tropical Storm Gustav was
located near latitude 18.8 north...longitude 79.3 west or about 125
miles...200 km...east-southeast of Grand Cayman and about 425 miles
...685 km...east-southeast of the western tip of Cuba.

Gustav is moving toward the west-northwest near 11 mph...19 km/hr.
A northwestward motion is expected to begin today and to continue
on Saturday and Sunday.  On this track...the center of Gustav will
pass near or over the Cayman Islands later today...over the western
portions of Cuba on Saturday...and into the southern Gulf of Mexico
on Sunday.

Data from an Air Force reconnaissance aircraft indicate that maximum
sustained winds are near 70 mph
...110 km/hr...with higher gusts.
Strengthening is likely during the next couple of days...and Gustav
is expected to become a hurricane at any time today.  Gustav could
become a major hurricane before reaching western Cuba.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles...220 km
from the center.

Yea, SOMEONE other than myself polished off the Captain Saturday night at Martin Dies...  About 1/4 of a jug left and I said "just finish it off" and they did.   rolling

Well, here in Clear Lake we're bagging up all the computers and battening down the hatches, such as they are. Normally they wouldn't make the call until Monday, but since that's Labor Day we're shutting everything down just in case. We probably won't hear if we get Tuesday off until Sunday or Monday.

RichardM,

We are not out of the woods.

A quote from Dr Jeff Masters

"The models continue to fall into two camps: models that foresee a track over Louisiana, making landfall Monday night or Tuesday morning (the GFS and GFDL models), and the models that bring Gustav very close to the Louisiana coast on Monday, then turn the storm westward towards Texas. The HWRF model, which was in the former camp, has now gone over to the westward-turn-to-Texas camp. The general trend of most of the models has been to build a stronger ridge of high pressure over the southern U.S. on Monday and Tuesday, and I forecast that Gustav will come very close to the Louisiana coast on Monday as a Category 3 hurricane, stall, then move westwards towards Texas. This is the solution of the latest HWRF model."
