I thought long and hard about this post; maybe I shouldn't write it but I think it's that important. I rank it up there with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall, Neil Armstrong landing on the moon, the Kennedy assasination, Nixon resigning the Presidency, 9-11, .... I never thought I'd see a black man nominated for President in my lifetime. I grew in Houston in the 50s in a family that had more than it's share of bigots (still does). My father wasn't like that, but he usually stayed quiet at family gatherings just to keep the peace. As I got a little older, we'd talk about what was going on in the news; Birmingham, Malcom X, Martin Luther King, the race riots. I learned. I don't know if I'm going to vote for Obama; I am a Republican, after all, and I disagree with a number of his positions. I don't know if he'll win, or what kind of job he'll do if he does win. But the fact that Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States says a lot about both the man AND our country; I'm very proud of both.
I never watch conventions, debates, or political broadcasts. They're too scripted and contribute no real information that I need to make my decision on casting my vote. But I'm going to watch this tonight, and record it, and want to urge everyone else to watch. This is unique; it can never happen again. No matter what you think of Obama, watch him tonight and be proud of Our Country, the United States of America.
(I expect the speeches will be quite inflammatory; hit the mute button when that happens, or turn off the TV after he's accepted the nomination. But I suspect you'll regret not actually seeing this. It really does go beyond partisan politics.)
