Hello --
I was wondering if anyone on the Board has a recommendation for a float trip outfitter in BB.  I have looked at the websites: Far Flung, Big Bend River Tours and Desert Sports, but sometimes personal experiences are much more helpful than the websites.  Although it looks like from the board posts that most of the members are DIY campers/hikers/paddlers, I thought your experiences might have given you an opinion about the outfitters -- which ones have good guides, really respect the river and the environment, etc., the kinds of things that are hard to know without some input from the "locals" as it were.  Normally, we (husband, brother and me) would plan the trip and do it ourselves (my brother is an Eagle Scout and my husband is an avid outdoor guy from SC), but the trip is a birthday present for my dad (former Scout leader) who just turned 70.  He is certainly in fine health, but  I thought an easy float trip with a guide would be a better choice for him.  I was thinking about one of the 3-day floats.  Dad took us to Big Bend as kids, but back then we mostly car camped.  I thought he would really enjoy a float trip through a place that he has always loved.

So I guess my questions are:
Any preference for one of the 3 outfitters over another?
Any recommendations  for which 3-day float trip would be best?
Do you think I still have time (if space is available) to do a 3-day trip this year or should I wait until spring next year?

Thank you in advance for any comments or suggestions.  I spent the afternoon reading a lot of posts (loved the story about the snake and the subsequent cub sightings as the hikers waited out the snake) and really appreciate the information and commentary.  Sorry if I have missed a nugget of a post that answers all my questions.

Desert Sports has a great reputation. I've used their services several times and had good experience. Rumor has it they have some of the best guides.

I have used Big Bend River Tours on a couple of trips and the owner Jan Forte is a member of BBC. They are dependable, on time, and have good equipment.

Generally speaking a 3 day trip sounds a bit much to me.  I would try to arrange a 1 or 2 day trip in Santa Elena Canyon and the water is high enough to do it this year.  Normal water conditions are so low that many times this canyon cannot be run so doing Santa Elena (or Mariscal Canyon) would be something special and unique.  I think a 3 day trip (especially during low water conditions) would get old after the first day or two.. You can probably do the lower canyons in three days...

Actually you can make a very nice 3 or 4 day trip out of Boquillas Canyon when the water is not in flood stage.  Spend a day canoeing in, set up a camp and spend a couple of days hiking and enjoying the views and solitude.  Fourth day canoe down to la Linda.  I recommend it.

You can probably do the lower canyons in three days...

You probably could, just watch for the wall bangers. Prehistoric river currents have created deep undercuts where the river suddenly turns and the current tends to push you straight into them.

But what's the point? In my experience, any wilderness experience should not be rushed. It takes me 2 days to shed all the mental baggage of where I was, before I can be totally where I am. And the last two days are full of thoughts about what's next after the trip; what I need to do when I get out to the world, and sadness about leaving. It's the days in the middle where the blessings are. To me the whole point of this wilderness/solitude thing is to get away from the world and live entirely in the present; to manage the next turn or ridge, where's the next water, food, camp, critters; to be a part of the moment in the place. Its mentally and spiritually cleansing. "If you ain't where you're at, you ain't nowhere."

The Lower Canyons are great for this. You're essentially cut off from the world. You have to be where you are to get to where you're going; to rush to the end is to lose the whole point of the experience. It's a zen thing: paradise is in the task, not the goal.  spc

I had a terrific three-day trip through Boquillas Canyon and one-day through Santa Elena Canyon, both with Far Flung, but they were more than a few years ago.  I really want to try the isolation of a Lower Canyons trip sometime.
